Excerpt from Competitive Position of the Midwestern Egg Industry Many egg producers in the Midwest have become increasingly concerned in recent years about the prices they receive for their eggs, particularly during the late spring and early winter when production is greatest. The growing dissatisfaction with producer price levels is an expression of some rather far-reaching troubles being experienced by the Midwestern egg industry. These difficulties are attributable to both external and internal forces. Externally, the egg industry is characterized by a rate of growth which is slower than that of the population. The per capita consumption of eggs has been declining, even though egg prices have declined in relation to prices of most other food products. (see Appendix I for demand analyses.) Excerpt from Costs of Procurement and Assembly of Eggs in Three Midwestern States The assembler is able to pay a higher price for the eggs due to his savings on labor and truck expense, This means that competitors, still sending trucks some distance for the eggs, would be at a price disadvantage of 1 to 2 cents per dozen, This puts the local assembler in a better position to hold his producers and maintain a steady supply of eggs to his customers, One of the indirect advantages of this plan is the closer working relationship between plant managers and producers, Producers whose eggs are consistently a low grade are invited to watch their eggs candled in order to be assured that they are being treated fairly, Discussions are held with these producers to determine reasons for the low grade-out, In most instances, these discussions reveal faulty management or handling practices which can be easily corrected, In other situations, disease problems may be suspected, and an expert on poultry diseases may be asked to suggest remedial action. With a voice as warm as a summer breeze, Nancy Hutchens recalls afternoons in the shade of the back porch, snapping beans for canning...family reunions where the gossip was as good as the food...the serene beauty of the first frost of winter...and other cherished Memories of a Midwestern Farm. Nancy Hutchens grew up on a southern Indiana farm in the 1950s, when horses still plowed the fields. Soap and butter were homemade, and success was a table laden with a hearty meal. Now she shares this bygone time in Memories of a Midwestern Farm, a celebration of country living sprinkled with irresistible recipes, reminiscences, and bits of timeless folk wisdom. Here are the charming poems and journal entries of Nancy Hutchens' grandmother, Mamaw Tribby; reflections on rural life from Willa Cather, Walt Whitman and others; and family photos and original illustrations that adorn the pages of this beautiful memoir. And here are more than one hundred classic recipes handed down in the Hutchens farmhouse kitchen. From "Moist and Crunchy Fried Chicken and Gravy" and "Green Beans Country Style" to "Sweet Cherry Dumplings" and "'Get You a Husband' Apple Pie," these mouthwatering favorites bring back the sweet and savory pleasures of country cooking for any occasion and every season. Memories of a Midwestern Farm is a delightful antidote to modern life, a tribute to the simple gifts that bring farm folks together -- hard work, close ties, and an abundance of good, wholesome food.

Contract Farming For Inclusive Market Access written by Carlos A. Da Silva and has been published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Business & Economics categories.

This book aims to typify the extent to which contract farming is helping small farmers to access markets and meet increasingly stringent requirements, not only of "modern" food manufacturers, retailers, exporters and food service firms,by also in non-food sectors such as biofuels and forestry. It also seeks to clarify differences in the functionality of contracts depending on commodity, market, technology, public policies and country circumstances. Conceptual issues are discussed and a series of case study appraisals based on real world examples from developing regions are presented. The issuesraised by the case study authors and the key messages synthesized in the initial book chapter bring new insights and contributions to further enrich knowledge on contract farming as a tool for inclusive market access in development countries.
