Overly complex companies are not viable on a long-term basis. Avoiding, reducing and managing complexity is a key task of modern day companies. This thesis specifically explores how complexity can be managed along the value chain of interconnected manufacturing companies. This research question is addressed first through a thorough literature review, compiling an overview of complexity management methods classified according to their applicability to different stages of the value chain. Then, interviews with representatives of four Swiss-based manufacturing companies are conducted to examine how complexity management methods are applied in business practice. Apart from an inconsistent ontology, complexity management was found to be largely centred on product complexity with significant gaps in the management and evaluation of market and organisational complexity. The literature review offers a structured and systematic compilation of how complexity can be managed along the value chain. Interrelations between the different components are identified and, at the same time, a reference process for integrated complexity management is presented, including a range of methods and strategies at different stages of the value chain. Insights obtained from the interviews supported the findings, while highlighting the importance for companies to take into consideration strategic, operational and organisational fit when implementing complexity management methods.

Supply chains are faced with a rising complexity with manifold effects. Because of the strong link between a supply chain's complexity and its efficiency, supply chain complexity management becomes a major challenge of today's business management. Therefore logistics and the supply chain management can play a significant role in mastering and managing complexity. The new book, edited by Thorsten Blecker and Wolfgang Kersten, is exemplifying the current progress in complexity management. Separate chapters are dedicated to clarify complexity management in transportation, networks and supply chains. It offers important insights of global and flexible network modelling to manage complexity, complexity in supply chains - developing human resource strategy, performance measurement of green supply chain management, complexity in transportation by means of containers and air-cargos. The volume, written by well-known experts of supply chain management from all over the world, shows applicable solutions, practical examples and use cases to illustrate complexity management and its application in logistics and supply chain management. It presents the central perspectives for a modern complexity management in supply chains. Therefore the book offers a fundamental understanding for workable complexity management concept their implementation to practitioners. The book offers fundamental insights into actual problems of an general complexity management concept and their implementation to practitioners in industry, logistics, management, service sector, research and apprenticeship. In addition to this it gives a valuable insight to the status of complexity management also for lecturers and students.

The treatise supports understanding the phenomena of complexity in engineering, distinguishes complexity from other challenges and presents an overview of definitions and applied approaches. The historical background of complexity management is explained by highlighting the important epochs, their key actors and their discoveries, findings and developments. Knowing about the appearance of early system awareness in ancient Greece, the creation of mechanical philosophy in the 17th century and the discovery of classic physics enables the reader to better comprehend modern system sciences and management approaches.A classification of complexity management approaches by research fields indicates current focus areas and starting points for future discussions. In a comprehensive map, the classification points out mutual overlaps between engineering disciplines in terms of similar complexity management approaches. Finally, the treatise introduces a generic complexity management framework, which is based on structural management approaches.

Manufacturing companies are increasingly confronted with internal and external complexity in a variety of ways, making coping with complexity the core of the management task. The optimal design of the range of product offerings as well as the configuration and coordination of the increasingly intertwined value chains represent the central challenges of globally operating companies. The complexity management of a company thus takes place within a relevant environment and depends on the respective business model. This manifests in the manufacturing industry, in particular in the different shape of the respective product offering and value chain architecture. Within the scope of this thesis various strategies of coping with complexity are presented and discussed. Based on five case studies, the theoretical findings are compared with the experience of the industry. A method for system analysis and design is proposed, which takes into account the business model and the environment of the company to optimize the system's ability to cope with complexity.

Michael Marti presents a complexity management model that is based on the reasoning that product architecture determines to a considerable extent how external complexity is translated into physical products. The model demonstrates a procedure to optimize a product’s architecture and is applied to several industrial products.

A comprehensive, one-stop reference for cutting-edge research in integrated risk management, modern applications, and best practices In the field of business, the ever-growing dependency on global supply chains has created new challenges that traditional risk management must be equipped to handle. Handbook of Integrated Risk Management in Global Supply Chains uses a multi-disciplinary approach to present an effective way to manage complex, diverse, and interconnected global supply chain risks. Contributions from leading academics and researchers provide an action-based framework that captures real issues, implementation challenges, and concepts emerging from industry studies. The handbook is divided into five parts: Foundations and Overview introduces risk management and discusses the impact of supply chain disruptions on corporate performance Integrated Risk Management: Operations and Finance Interface explores the joint use of operational and financial hedging of commodity price uncertainties Supply Chain Finance discusses financing alternatives and the role of financial services in procurement contracts; inventory management and capital structure; and bank financing of inventories Operational Risk Management Strategies outlines supply risks and challenges in decentralized supply chains, such as competition and misalignment of incentives between buyers and suppliers Industrial Applications presents examples and case studies that showcase the discussed methodologies Each topic's presentation includes an introduction, key theories, formulas, and applications. Discussions conclude with a summary of the main concepts, a real-world example, and professional insights into common challenges and best practices. Handbook of Integrated Risk Management in Global Supply Chains is an essential reference for academics and practitioners in the areas of supply chain management, global logistics, management science, and industrial engineering who gather, analyze, and draw results from data. The handbook is also a suitable supplement for operations research, risk management, and financial engineering courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels.

Structural Complexity Management written by Udo Lindemann and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Product design is characterized by a steady increase in complexity. The main focus of this book is a structural approach on complexity management. This means, system structures are considered in order to address the challenge of complexity in all aspects of product design. Structures arise from the complex dependencies of system elements. Thus, the identification of system structures provides access to the understanding of system behavior in practical applications. The book presents a methodology that enables the analysis, control and optimization of complex structures, and the applicability of domain-spanning problems. The methodology allows significant improvements on handling system complexity by creating improved system understanding on the one hand and optimizing product design that is robust for system adaptations on the other hand. Developers can thereby enhance project coordination and improve communication between team members and as a result shorten development time. The practical application of the methodology is described by means of two detailed examples.
