Complications of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: The Survival Handbook aims to serve as a reference manual for all cardiologists, particularly those in training, who face life-threatening complications of PCI on a day-to-day basis. Drawing on the background and experience of cardiologists from both sides of the Atlantic, the book aims to be a valuable, practical, and most of all readable resource for the interventional cardiologist. The principles and practices described in the book will be of interest to all practitioners of interventional catheter procedures, including interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, and cardiologists.Few medical procedures have evolved as dramatically or as quickly as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). From its initial conception, PCI has evolved to become a very complex procedure. Each year in the United States well over 1,000,000 percutaneous coronary intervention procedures are performed. However as the volume and complexity of the procedures being performed has increased, so has the potential for procedural error leading to life-threatening complications. Knowledge of what complications can occur during PCI and how to deal with them is vital for the practicing cardiologist, and can mean the difference between life and death.

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty is presently the widest used non-surgi cal method for the treatment of stenotic lesions in coronary artery disease. Continuous development of the procedure and equipment has made complex and multi-vessel-inter ventions possible and has led to other techniques of intravascular angioplasty. In reviewing current results, this volume pays particular attention to causes, incidence, circumstances, recognition, treatment and outcome of complications of PTCA; it also considers restenosis, which still occurs at an unsatisfactory high rate after primarily successful procedures. To deal with these topics, experts on PTCA met to discuss their experiences and insights into peculiar aspects of complications in PTCA. The discussion was subdivided into: Recognition of complications; Complications in new interventional techniques; Management of complications; and Restenosis after angioplasty. The question of whether angiographic and pathological characteristics of sclerotic lesions allow the identification of complication-prone lesions in advance is discussed in the first chapter. One paper deals with the state of the art of digital cardiac imaging, which enables the operator to have an early knowledge of and adequate reaction to possible complications occurring during angioplasty. Special attention is directed to the so-called "high-risk"-PTCA, detailing the clinical variables, in order to have better knowledge about patients with a higher probability of unsuccessful or complicated procedures.

Percutaneous interventions may be very demanding, challenging and complicated. Even in apparently simple cases, this is true. This superb handbook is the first to focus solely on complications during percutaneous cardiovascular interventions. Handbook of Complications during Percutaneous Coronary Interventions provides both the neophyte and the experienced interventional cardiologist with guidance on how to prevent and to treat complications in the cath lab. The editors and the excellent team of contributors ensure that the reader is provided with practically-oriented advice, as well as tips and tricks, many of which are not included in the classic textbooks.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or angioplasty is a procedure to treat stenotic (narrowed) coronary arteries. To minimize the risk of thrombotic complications during and shortly after the procedure, patients receive antithrombotic agents. However, antithrombotic agents may increase the risk of bleeding. Peri-procedural bleeding is the most common non-cardiac complication of PCI and is associated with short- and long-term risk of mortality, other ischemic events, prolonged in-hospital stay and higher costs of care. In patients undergoing PCI, approximately half of the bleeding events occur at the arterial access site. In deciding on the appropriate antithrombotic regimen for patients undergoing PCI, both protection from thrombotic complications and avoidance of peri-procedural bleeding need to be considered. This review was undertaken to investigate the incidence of procedure site bleeding with pre- or post-operative exposure to antithrombotic agents, specifically clopidogrel, aspirin, tenecteplase, bivalirudin, or heparin, in comparison with no pre- or post-operative exposure to these agents and to examine management strategies for procedure site bleeding complications following PCI.

A practical and technical handbook providing operators with a step-by-step description of how to perform some of the techniques involved in the procedures, and how to troubleshoot some of the problems along the way. Examples with pictures will be provided, along with live angiographies. At the end of each chapter, the author will be provided with 3 questions to answer. Those questions will be developed by the editor and the contributors. The idea is to provide a quick reference to the most current problems encountered with a specific issue developed in the chapter. Nowadays, the busy clinician is unlikely to exclusively rely on lengthy textbooks to learn specific complex techniques. That is one of the reasons for the popularity of CTO courses, live demonstrations, and conferences and, there are consequently many courses offered around the world to help new operators in the field. CTO PCI has emerged as a very effective procedure to help patients with CTOs, with very high success and low complications rates. It is however a very challenging procedure with multiple pitfalls along the way to success, both in specific cases, but also in the learning process. There are currently no single reference or "one-stop shop" for the operator who wants to learn a given technique that he or she may has seen performed live in a dedicated proctorship event, or in a live demonstration, or to even troubleshoot a problem encountered in daily CTO PCI practice. This will be the first handbook formatted for the busy interventional cardiologist. This book will become a “must have” for operators who are practicing CTO PCI and who want a quick reference. However, it will also provide tips and tricks currently used in the field.

This book discusses the clinical indications for chronic total occlusion (CTO) recanalization using percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and illustrates the recent academic findings on this constantly developing field of study. In addition to exploring the indications for revascularization and reading angiographies, the authors examine new strategies and techniques using innovative materials and equipment employing the antegrade, retrograde and their hybrid approaches, with a particular focus on the settings and management as well as the prevention of complications. They also describe the future potential of CTO PCI, with emphasis on how the latest advances in clinical science may be integrated into current and future therapies. Current Trend and Techniques of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Chronic Total Occlusion is an informative book providing academic insights for interventional cardiologists, vascular surgeons, clinical residents, medical students and scholars in the field of peripheral arterial CTO interventions.

Complications of Cardiovascular Procedures provides interventional cardiologists, endovascular interventionalists, and physicians in training with a comprehensive resource on the prevention and management of complications in interventional cardiology. The book focuses specifically on risk factors, prevention, and management with conventional and/or with bailout techniques and devices. It includes many images of common and rare complications and of devices. The first section, on general principles, includes quality assurance, training requirements, legal considerations, adjunctive pharmacotherapy, and conscious sedation. Subsequent sections cover general complications of invasive procedures and complications of specific coronary interventions, noncoronary cardiac interventions, peripheral vascular procedures, pediatric interventions, and electrophysiology procedures. A companion website includes videos of over 30 complications and bailout techniques.
