Excerpt from Compositae Newsletter, Vol. 28: June 1996 The Swedish Museum of Natural History has recently started the work of entering collection data into data bases. In the course of this work, type collections have gained special attention. The register of Asteraceae types has now been brought to a point were data from all identified type specimens have been entered into the data base. The Department of Phanerogamic Botany keeps type material separate from the main collection, and the data base includes information of material kept in this type collection only. It must be pointed out in this context that many types are still to be found in the main collections, particularly among the older material. Indeed new types are continuously identified by members of the staff and by scientists who have had material on loan, or by visitors to the herbarium. Excerpt from Compositae Newsletter, Vol. 7 The taxonomy of the Vernonieae, reviewed by Jones, is still in an unrevised state and our chemical knowledge of it, as shown by Harborne and Williams, is also very incomplete. There is some indication that most, if not all, of the old-world species included now in such genera as Vernonia and Centratherum will prove eventually to be generically distinct from those of the New. The Vernonieae is now the least well known of all the tribes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Compositae Newsletter: June, 1997 In our former studies on the genus, we have observed specimens identified by other authors as D. Austriacum having glandular hairs all over the plant, and other specimens lacking this hair type on the involucral bracts, peduncles and stems. Using the current keys both specimen types can be included in D. Austri'acum because of little precision in the use of the indumentum character. But only the specimens lacking glandular hairs on the involucral bracts, peduncles and stems agree with the protologue where there is no mention of the presence of this kind of uichomes. Excerpt from Compositae Newsletter, Vol. 22 Heterolepis aliena and H. Peduncularis. The archespore is 1-celled (fig. 4a, F). The heterotypic meiotic division results in a dyad stage (fig. 4g). The succeeding homotypic division of the dyad cell nucleus is not accompanied by cell wall for mation so each one of the dyad cells becomes 2-nucleate (fig. 4c, H). The apical dyad cell degenerates (fig. 4b, The basal one develops into an embryo sac (fig. 4d, E, I) during increasing cell growth and plasma vacuolization (fig. 4j, K). After new nuclear divisions there is a 4-nucleate embryo sac stage (fig. 4l). The material shows all the accounted stages very richly. However, there are no older embryo sac stages. Excerpt from Compositae Newsletter, Vol. 15: December, 1988 Much broader phylogenetic comparisons were performed using 11 enzymes and 57 genera of the Asteraceae, representing all currently recognized tribes. A total of 926 restriction site mutations were mapped, 328 of which were phylogenetically informative. Wagner parsimony analyses using the glo bal swapping option of paup (developed by D. Swofford) generated 12 equally parsimonious trees of 1 315 steps, all of which support the monophyly of the subfamily Asteroideae (sensu Thorne, Phylogenetic analysis of the data using the same options in phy lip (developed by J. Felsenstein) gave six equally parsimonious trees of 1316 steps, all of which support two mono phyletic subfamilies (asteroideae and Cichorioideae sensu Thorne, A bootstrap analysis (felsenstein, 1985) produced a majority rule consensus tree (fig. 2) with 1318 steps and 30% homoplasy. Although this tree is three steps longer than the most parsimonious tree, it is presented here because it shows the groups that are best supported statistically.
