Abstract: A new full wave methodology and a well-established ray-tracing method are employed for indoor wireless communications channel modeling. The full-wave method, referred to as array decomposition-fast multipole method (AD-FMM) for indoor simulation, is based on the finite element-boundary integral formulation. A key feature of this technique is the use of domain decomposition methods to efficiently model repeatable components such as bricks, chairs, tables, etc. This leads to significant memory reduction allowing the simulation of realistic structures with different antenna locations to predict the statistical profiles of the received signal strength. These profiles are subsequently used to evaluate the bit error rate (BER) for specific digital modulation schemes. The method is also employed to predict the statistical channel capacity for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems via the complementary cumulative distribution function. This dissertation also exploits an established ray-tracing electromagnetic (EM) simulation tool, and measurements for indoor channel characterization for wireless applications. Specifically, measurements are conducted for indoor environments to validate the channel model obtained using ray tracing tools. Such ray-tracing channel models are appropriate for 4th generation 60~GHz communication systems.

Parts of the present thesis are dedicated to new developments in the Scaling function based Multiresolution Time Domain (S-MRTD) techniques. However, a larger research effort of the thesis is focused on efficient full-wave modeling of indoor wireless channels and systems. Through this, the potential of S-MRTD as a computational tool for the solution of various indoor wireless problems is illustrated. It is also shown that the S-MRTD method is well-suited to parallel implementation. Despite the use of high-order finite differences and the associated increase in inter-processor communication, excellent parallelization efficiencies are achieved on a Linux cluster. As a result, the objective of formulating a full-wave tool, allowing for site-specific channel modeling, becomes feasible. Researching S-MRTD as a numerical technique, contributions are made in relation with the dispersion properties of Coifman scaling functions, optimal truncation of finite-difference operators, and the treatment of hard boundary conditions. In addition, a new high-order time-sampling S-MRTD technique is presented that overcomes the numerical stability limitations of previous S-MRTD schemes and highly accelerates the speed of the field updating procedure. Applying S-MRTD to indoor wireless problems, it is shown that a scheme that is formulated with the Deslauriers-Dubuc biorthogonal functions offers an efficient and accurate alternative to the conventional Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) for the characterization of indoor wireless channels. The relationship between the field analysis of wireless channels and their system-level descriptions is investigated. It is shown that a knowledge of the channel impulse responses, computed with S-MRTD simulations, enables physics-based system-level performance evaluation, optimization and compatibility studies of ultra-wideband communication systems. Moreover, the limitations of two-dimensional solvers are systematically investigated through comparisons with their three-dimensional counterparts.

This monograph is a comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art methodologies that can dramatically enhance the efficiency of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, the most popular electromagnetic field solver of the time-domain form of Maxwell's equations. These methodologies are aimed at optimally tailoring the computational resources needed for the wideband simulation of microwave and optical structures to their geometry, as well as the nature of the field solutions they support. That is achieved by the development of robust “adaptive meshing” approaches, which amount to varying the total number of unknown field quantities in the course of the simulation to adapt to temporally or spatially localized field features. While mesh adaptation is an extremely desirable FDTD feature, known to reduce simulation times by orders of magnitude, it is not always robust. The specific techniques presented in this book are characterized by stability and robustness. Therefore, they are excellent computer analysis and design (CAD) tools. The book starts by introducing the FDTD technique, along with challenges related to its application to the analysis of real-life microwave and optical structures. It then proceeds to developing an adaptive mesh refinement method based on the use of multiresolution analysis and, more specifically, the Haar wavelet basis. Furthermore, a new method to embed a moving adaptive mesh in FDTD, the dynamically adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) FDTD technique, is introduced and explained in detail.
