This book serves as a preliminary reference for the principles of thermal radiation and its modelling in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Radiation Heat Transfer Modelling with Computational Fluid Dynamics covers strategies and processes for synthesizing radiation with CFD setups, computational techniques for solving the radiative transfer equation, the strengths and weaknesses thereof, boundary and initial conditions and relevant guidelines. Describing the strategic planning of a typical project, the book includes the spectroscopic properties of gases, some particulates and porous media. FEATURES Fills a gap between existing CFD and thermal radiation textbooks and elaborates on some aspects of user manuals. Aims at (1) CFD practitioners who are newcomers to thermal radiation and are looking for a preliminary introduction thereon and (2) modellers familiar with thermal radiation looking for a precursory introduction to CFD. The book is tilted somewhat towards the first group. Provides guidelines for choosing the right model, the strategic planning of the modelling and its implementation. Outlines the pitfalls of some solution techniques. Describes how radiation is included in the variety of boundary condition types offered by CFD codes. Helps to develop the practical skills required to plan, implement and interpret thermal radiation within the typical CFD code. Addresses a wide variety of physical circumstances in which thermal radiation plays a role. Offers ample references for readers searching for additional details. Includes several examples of practical applications, including fire, a utility boiler and car headlights in cold environments. This book is intended for researchers and professionals who wish to simulate problems that involve fluid flow and heat transfer with thermal radiation.

The objective of this dissertation is the development of numerical models forsimulation of radiative heat transfer for a general 3D Cartesian, non-homogeneous, emitting, absorbing, scattering and non-gray media. The overall problem is dividedin three parts consisting of: i) the acceleration in the calculation of the non-grayradiative properties of the gas and droplets, ii) the solution of the radiative transferequation (RTE) and iii) the coupling of radiation effects with the gas phase and particlesfor time integration solution. For the first part of the study, Mie theory andthe HITEMP database are used to construct the exact radiative properties of theparticle-gas media on a line by line basis. A correlated-k method is devised to representthe gas (H2O and CO2) absorption coefficients in terms of frequency distribution for later coupling with the scattering from the particles (water droplets) on a narrowband basis.^A scaling procedure using the Sauter mean diameter is developed inorder to accelerate the calculation of the radiative properties of the particle distributionresulting in significant computational savings with little loss of accuracy. Next, a classical Discrete Ordinates Method (DOM-SN) with flux limiters or total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes for the angular and spatial discretization is formulated for the solution of the RTE in a 3D absorbing, emitting and scattering enclosure, being the final system of equations solved using a Newton-Krylov method. Inclusion of TVD schemes shows that convergence, accuracy and stability in the RTE solution are superior to classical step (upwind) or diamond (central) schemes. A first solutionfor the interaction of the radiative field with the participating media composed of atwo-phase particle-gas mixture is shown for the evaporation of water sprays due tothe absorption of radiative energy.^The study shows that the evolution of the diametersize distribution due to radiation effects can be modeled through its first twomoments and the introduction of a non-symmetric density function. Overall, results suggest that the proposed numerical approaches for each aspectof the complicated radiative transfer problem may lead to a potential practical solutionin real situations. Through these methods, radiation calculations are madefeasible since accuracy is balanced with the required computational times. The latterencourages the inclusion of radiation effects on practical engineering applicationssuch as, fluid mechanics, combustion processes, 3D atmospheres, among others. Thisinclusion may improve the understanding of the physics behind these applications, including radiation effects, allowing for further development of high fidelity modelingapproaches.

The common methods for finding the local radiative flux divergence in participating media through solution of the radiative transfer equation are outlined. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in terms of their speed, ability to handle spectral properties and scattering phenomena, as well as their accuracy in different ranges of media transport properties. The suitability of each method for inclusion in the energy equation to efficiently solve multi-mode thermal transfer problems is discussed. Lastly, remaining topics needing research are outlined.

Radiation in participating media is an important transport mechanism in many physical systems. The simulation of complex radiative transfer has not effectively exploited high-performance computing capabilities. In response to this need, a workshop attended by members active in the high-performance computing community, members active in the radiative transfer community, and members from closely related fields was held to identify how high-performance computing can be used effectively to solve the transport equation and advance the state-of-the-art in simulating radiative heat transfer. This workshop was held on March 29-30, 1994 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was conducted by Sandia National Laboratories. The objectives of this workshop were to provide a vehicle to stimulate interest and new research directions within the two communities to exploit the advantages of high-performance computing for solving complex radiative heat transfer problems that are otherwise intractable.
