Essays about the original Black Panther Party’s local chapters in seven American cities that seek “to move beyond the usual media stereotypes . . . Recommended” (Choice). The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was founded in Oakland, California, in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. It was perhaps the most visible of the Black Power groups in the late sixties and early seventies, not least because of its confrontational politics, its rejection of nonviolence, and its headline-catching, gun-toting militancy. Important on the national scene and highly visible on college campuses, the Panthers also worked at building grassroots support for local black political and economic power. Although there have been many books about the Black Panthers, none has looked at the organization and its work at the local level. This book goes beyond Oakland and Chicago examines the work and actions of seven local initiatives in Baltimore, Winston-Salem, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. These local organizations are revealed as committed to programs of community activism that focused on problems of social, political, and economic justice.

The implementation of communism in Czechoslovakia offered an opportunity to pursue revolutionary change in traditional understandings of preventive medicine and re-imagine the role of public health in society. By employing the imperatives of Sovietization and "Pavlovian" medicine, the leadership of Czechoslovakia's hygiene services sought to prioritize population health and physiological well-being as the highest aim of the socialist state, and furthermore, counteract the overwhelming dominance of reductionist and therapeutic approaches to medicine and health. This socialist approach to preventive medicine aspired to transform all the environmental conditions of work and daily life that exerted influence on the human biophysical condition, and in turn, broadly improve population health outside of the therapeutic or clinical context. Such an active and interventionist role in the affairs of state, economy, and society, these hygienists asserted, was the primary route to the eradication of disease and the continued development of communism itself. Yet the implementation of an environment-focused public health program consistently encountered strong opposition. In contrast to the avowed aims of communism, local and central authorities in Czechoslovakia had no more willingness than their Western counterparts to alter traditional modes of production on the basis of unproven environmental health hazards, vague multi-variable etiologies, or a particular vision of a hygienic and salubrious modernity. Neither was the larger medical community interested in ceding the primacy of therapeutics to a broadly conceived environmental approach to preventive medicine. As this confrontation between ideals played out in the 1950s, the attempt to place public health over the demands of socialist economic efficiency ultimately failed, and entrenched attitudes towards industry, economy, and preventive medical practice remained largely unchanged. Nonetheless, this study reveals the early rise and struggle of an environmentally concerned "new" public health structuralism, and therefore challenges dominant narratives about coercion and ideological intransigence during Sovietization, the uncritical adoption of a Stalinist economic model, the behavioral and reductionist focus of mid-20th century public health, and lastly, the limited professional vision of preventive medicine and its prerogatives in the modern era

Especially since the 2003 SARS crisis, China’s healthcare system has become a growing source of concern, both for citizens and the Chinese government. China’s once praised public health services have deteriorated into a system driven by economic constraints, in which poor people often fail to get access, and middle-income households risk to be dragged into poverty by the rising costs of care. The New Rural Co-operative Medical System (NRCMS) was introduced to counter these tendencies and constitutes the main system of public health insurance in China today. This book outlines the nature of the system, traces the processes of its enactment and implementation, and discusses its strengths and weaknesses. It argues that the contested nature of the fields of health policy and social security has long been overlooked, and reinterprets the NRCMS as a compromise between opposing political interests. Furthermore, it argues that structural institutional misfits facilitate fiscal imbalances and a culture of non-compliance in local health policy, which distort the outcomes of the implementation and limit the effectiveness of insurance. These dynamics also raise fundamental questions regarding the effectiveness of other areas of the comprehensive New Health Reform, which China has initiated to overhaul its healthcare system.

Europe was in turmoil during the first half of the twentieth century. The political stability that emanated from nineteenth-century political liberalism began to break down, reaching climaxes in the Great War, the Spanish Civil War, and the Second World War. Revolutions in Russia and Spain threatened parliamentary governments, and the Armenian genocide that began in 1915 foreshadowed the systematic destruction of European Jews in the 1930s and 1940s. Dictators seized power and established authoritarian regimes that stymied democratic expression and censored the press. Much of the scholarship on each of the conflicts has tended to focus on the military (male) and the civilian (female) binary. Women and children experienced every conflict during this tumultuous period as civilians, consumers, victims, exiles, and combatants. As histories of women and war suggest, there are exciting new areas of research and scholarship that resist simplistic binaries. Women were not simply civilians or victims. They were actors in the minutiae of wars, revolutions, dictatorships, and genocides. Children were present in these conflicts and not invisible, as many histories suggest. They too were actors and often politicized by propagandist literature and sectarian education through their own experiences and the politics of their families. This collection seeks to complicate the child/ adult distinction and examine the experiences of women and children as lenses to view a more collective face of conflict. While the volume brings to attention conflicts in Europe, the editors acknowledge the global ramifications of the revolutions, wars, and genocides, as well as the multitude of individual experiences. This collection seeks to expand understanding of the personal as the political in European conflicts from 1900-1950. We believe the focus on women and children offers a diverse perspective on five tumultuous decades of European history.
