The Belly of Paris (Le Ventre de Paris) is the third novel in Émile Zola's twenty-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart, first published in 1873. It is a novel of the teeming life which surrounds the great central markets of Paris. The book was originally translated into English by Henry Vizetelly and published in 1888 under the title Fat and Thin. After Vizetelly's imprisonment for obscene libel the novel was one of those revised and expurgated by his son, Ernest Alfred Vizetelly. The heroine is Lisa Quenu, a daughter of Antoine Macquart. She has become prosperous, and with prosperity her selfishness has increased. Her brother-in-law Florent had escaped from penal servitude in Cayenne and lived for a short time in her house, but she became tired of his presence and ultimately denounced him to the police. Émile Zola (1840 – 1902) was a French writer, the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalization of France.

Dante's Divine Comedy played a dual role in its relation to Italian Renaissance culture, actively shaping the fabric of that culture and, at the same time, being shaped by it. This productive relationship is examined in Commentary and Ideology, Deborah Parker's thorough compendium on the reception of Dante's chief work. By studying the social and historical circumstances under which commentaries on Dante were produced, the author clarifies the critical tradition of commentary and explains the ways in which this important body of material can be used in interpreting Dante's poem. Parker begins by tracing the criticism of Dante commentaries from the nineteenth century to the present and then examines the tradition of commentary from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Los aspectos que distinguen hoy el nacionalismo vasco, confiriéndole sus peculiaridades específicas, sólo pueden entenderse siglo mediante el estudio, de la estructura social del País Vasco en el momento en que dicho nacionalismo se formulo, así como por el, análisis de la evolución de los elementos que configuraron históricamente la conciencia de los vascos como pueblo, elementos que no suponen, hasta finales del siglo XIX, la aspiración a la independencia. El análisis de los elementos ideológicos presentes en la obra del fundador carismático del Partido Nacionalista Vasco no puede por sí solo -con ser elemento importante- explicar los porqués de los aspectos diferenciales del movimiento por él creado.. Para dar una respuesta a tales temas es necesario analizar, por una parte, las características y conflictos de los sujetos sociales que actúan en la sociedad en que dicho fundador vive y por otra, analizar las causas de la pervivencia, generalidad e intransigencia del pensamiento fuerista en el último cuarto del pasado siglo, lo que exige explicar el origen de los mitos históricos tradicionales del País Vasco, resucitados por un tardío romanticismo y utilizados políticamente en contra de la sociedad burguesa que revoluciona las estructuras sociales vascas -y más particularmente vizcaínas- a partir del término de la segunda guerra carlista. El nacionalismo vasco iba a aparecer en el marco definido por las transformaciones de todo tipo que acarrea la industrialización. En su origen concurrirían fundamentalmente dos sectores sociales: uno procedente del tradicionalismo, e integrado de modo principal -pero no exclusivo- por elementos de la pequeña burguesía urbana marginados por el nuevo modelo de sociedad; otro, compuesto por antiguos fueristas intransigentes, vinculados, en número no despreciable, a familias de notables rurales que, por la fecha en que se incorporaron a las actividades industriales y por la naturaleza de éstas, se encuentran enfrentados tanto económica como políticamente a la alta burguesía que monopoliza el poder en Vizcaya. El objeto central de este .libro es precisamente, analizar las contradicciones y enfrentamientos que se producen entre los dos sectores existentes en el seno del Partido Nacionalista Vasco. A la luz de este enfrentamiento, se analiza la evolución en el pensamiento del fundador del PNV,.Sabino de Arana y Goiri, desde sus iniciales planteamientos antiindustrialistas y tradicionalistas, y se estudian los efectos que, para el programa nacionalista, tuvieron las discrepancias entre la burguesía nacionalista «regionalista» y los «puristas:» independentistas.
