L’autore di questo libro, figlio di padre pescatore e madre contadina, è nato a Sperlonga nella Grotta dell’imperatore Tiberio Cesare, precedente dimora di Polifemo, il ciclope accecato da Ulisse, raccontato da Omero. La sua famiglia, trovatasi sul fronte mare della linea di guerra di Cassino, vi si era rifugiata per ripararsi dai bombardamenti degli amici-nemici Tedeschi e dei nemici-amici Alleati. Salvato da sua madre da sotto le macerie della casa centrata dai caccia tedeschi, è sopravvissuto agli stenti del tempo grazie al latte di una capra rubata da suo padre ai Tedeschi Avviato al mestiere di fabbro-meccanico, ebbe poi la fortuna e la tenacia di continuare gli studi fino a laurearsi all’Università di Urbino, diventare Professore di Filosofia all’Università di Ferrara e condurre ricerche anche nell’ambito della cultura e della filosofia tedesca e austriaca, pubblicando libri e saggi di filosofia. Andato in pensione, aveva deciso di non scriverne più di libri. Poi all’improvviso si è ritrovato a comporre questo, che lui precisa di non aver scritto da solo: “L’autore di questo scritto non sono solo io. Lo è anche mia madre, almeno per la prima parte. Componiamo questo libro insieme, lei con la memoria, io con la penna. La maggior parte delle storie iniziali che andrò a scrivere me le ha raccontate lei. Lei poteva solo raccontare. Non sapeva né leggere né scrivere, ma era orgogliosa di aver fatto un figlio che aveva imparato a leggere e scrivere. Così io, ora, oltre a scrivere i miei ricordi, posso trascrivere anche i suoi, che lei consegnò a suo tempo, come in eredità, alla mia memoria. Senza le testimonianze di mia madre, la parte più importante, quella iniziale, di questo libro non esisterebbe; e senza la mia penna non esisterebbero neppure i suoi racconti, che, coloro ai quali li ho anticipati a voce, li hanno trovati belli e interessanti. Spero anche chi li legge ora che li ho scritti”.

This elegant essay exemplifies Blumenberg's ideas about the ability of the historical study of metaphor to illuminate essential aspects of being human. Originally published in the same year as his monumental Work on Myth, Shipwreck with Spectator traces the evolution of the complex of metaphors related to the sea, to shipwreck, and to the role of the spectator in human culture from ancient Greece to modern times. The sea is one of humanity's oldest metaphors for life, and a sea journey, Blumenberg observes, has often stood for our journey through life. We all know the role that shipwrecks can play in this journey, and at some level we have all played witness to others' wrecks, standing in safety and knowing that there is nothing we can do to help, yet fixed comfortably or uncomfortably in our ambiguous role as spectator.
