"Black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii Leach, 1814) was added to the Candidate Species list of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) on 23 June 1999 (64 FR 33466), transferred to the NMFS Species of Concern list on 15 April 2004 (69 FR 19975), and has since been considered for addition to the List of Endangered and Threatened Species as created by the Endangered Species Act of 1973 as amended (ESA; 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). The species is currently listed on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species (Smith et al. 2003). NMFS initiated an informal ESA status review of black abalone on 15 July 2003, and conducted biological scoping workshops on 29-30 January 2004 and 31 July-1 August 2006. NMFS formally announced initiation of a black abalone status review on 17 October 2006 (71 FR 61021), and solicited information from the public regarding: life history and current status of the species, historic and current distribution and abundance patterns, potential factors for the species= decline (e.g., overharvesting, natural predation, disease, habitat loss, etc.), and ongoing conservation measures being taken to protect the species"--Introduction.

In 1966 Congress passed the National Sea Grant College Program Act to promote marine research, education, and extension services in institutions along the nation's ocean and Great Lakes coasts. In Maryland a Sea Grant Program -- a partnership among federal and state governments, universities, and industries -- began in 1977, and in 1982 the University of Maryland was named the nation's seventeenth Sea Grant College. The Maryland Sea Grant College focuses its efforts on the Chesapeake Bay, with emphasis on the marine concerns of fisheries, seafood technology, and environmental quality. The first comprehensive review of the biology of the eastern oyster in more than thirty years. The twenty-one chapters synthesize every aspect of oyster biology -- for instance, general anatomy, physiology, the circulatory system, reproduction, genetics, diseases -- and issues related to management and aquaculture.

Living Shorelines: The Science and Management of Nature-based Coastal Protection compiles, synthesizes and interprets the current state of the knowledge on the science and practice of nature-based shoreline protection. This book will serve as a valuable reference to guide scientists, students, managers, planners, regulators, environmental and engineering consultants, and others engaged in the design and implementation of living shorelines. This volume provides a background and history of living shorelines, understandings on management, policy, and project designs, technical synthesis of the science related to living shorelines including insights from new studies, and the identification of research needs, lessons learned, and perspectives on future guidance. Makes recommendations on the correct usage of the term living shorelines Offers guidance for shoreline management in the future Includes lessons learned from the practice of shoreline restoration/conservation Synthesizes regional perspectives to identify strategies for the successful design and implementation of living shorelines Reviews specific design criteria for successful implementation of living shorelines Provides detailed discussions of social, regulatory, scientific and technical considerations to justify and design living shoreline projects International perspectives are presented from leading researchers and managers in the East, West and Gulf coasts of the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia that are working on natural approaches to shoreline management. The broad geographic scope and interdisciplinary nature of contributing authors will help to facilitate dialogue and transfer knowledge among different disciplines and across different regions. This title represents the first state of the art summary of existing knowledge of the hard clam by experts in various disciplines. Containing a compendium of literature on the hard clam, comprehensive chapters on various aspects of its biology as well as summaries of knowledge including the gray literature on this economically important species, this volume represents a comprehensive source of biological information for managers and researchers interested in shallow marine and estuarine ecosystems. Research students and managers charged with maintaining coastal ecosystems will also find a wealth of background material. The first synthesis of available information on the mercenaria mercenaria, this title is a response to the needs of individuals involved in hard clam aquaculture and scientists interested in molluscan biology, coastal ocean ecology and similar fields. Over 2300 documents have been synthesized, and chapter authors have added unpublished information as well as new material.
