Electricity is a fundamental aspect of physics and everyday life, and understanding its basic concepts can help you grasp how it powers everything from your home appliances to large industrial machines. Electrical Engineering forms the foundation of Electrical, Electronics, Communications, Controls, Computers, Information, Instrumentation, etc. Hence a good grasp of the fundamentals of Electrical Engineering is an absolute necessity to become a good engineer in any discipline. Electrical Energy is convenient and efficient for production of light, mechanical energy and is used in information processing. For the first two uses, it can be transported economically and in a clean fashion (as compared to transporting coal, for example) over long-distance lines to be available at the point of use. Electric energy also can transport information over tremendous distances, with or without wires, equally efficiently and economically. There is almost no competitor to electric energy in these fields. Electric energy does not occur naturally in usable form and must therefore be centrally generated and instantly transported to myriad points of use spread geographically over vast areas, even beyond state or national boundaries. It cannot be stored in large-enough quantities for any major use.

Step by step development of basic electric and magnetic theory, aided with mathematics and numerous sketches, for electrical engineering students pursuing diploma and degree courses in power engineering. The book is unique in its style of presentation. Independent thought process beyond conventional way of learning is essential for deep insight of any subject, and this book has been written with this philosophy. Some new concepts, topics, figures and terminology will be found in various places in the book, most significant one being the marked distinction between the potential energy (PE) and stored energy (SE). Such concepts basically emerged from author’s own thought process, and hence, remain open for debate and corrective criticism, expected mainly from the teaching fraternity.

"Field Theory Concepts" is a new approach to the teaching and understanding of field theory. Exploiting formal analo- gies of electric, magnetic, and conduction fields and introducing generic concepts results in a transparently structured electomagnetic field theory. Highly illustrative terms alloweasyaccess to the concepts of curl and div which generally are conceptually demanding. Emphasis is placed on the static, quasistatic and dynamic nature of fields. Eventually, numerical field calculation algorithms, e.g. Finite Element method and Monte Carlo method, are presented in a concise yet illustrative manner.

In 1968 when I forsook horticulture and plant physiology to try, with the help of Sea Grant funds, wetland ecology, it didn’t take long to discover a slim volume published in 1959 by the University of Georgia and edited by R. A. Ragotzkie, L. R. Pomeroy, J. M. Teal, and D. C. Scott, entitled “Proceedings of the Salt Marsh Conference” held in 1958 at the Marine Institute, Sapelo Island, Ga. Now forty years later, the Sapelo Island conference has been the major intellectual impetus, and another Sea Grant Program the major backer, of another symposium, the “International Symposium: Concepts and Controversies in Tidal Marsh Ecology”. This one re-examines the ideas of that first conference, ideas that stimulated four decades of research and led to major legislation in the United States to conserve coastal wetlands. It is dedicated, appropriately, to two then young scientists – Eugene P. Odum and John M. Teal – whose inspiration has been the starting place for a generation of coastal wetland and estuarine research. I do not mean to suggest that wetland research started at Sapelo Island. In 1899 H. C. Cowles described successional processes in Lake Michigan freshwater marsh ponds. There is a large and valuable early literature about northern bogs, most of it from Europe and the former USSR, although Eville Gorham and R. L. Lindeman made significant contributions to the American literature before 1960. V. J.

William James (1842–1910) is widely regarded as the founding figure of modern psychology and one of the most important philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Renowned for his philosophical theory of pragmatism and memorable turns of phrase, such as ‘stream of consciousness’ and the ‘will to believe’, he made enormous contributions to a rich array of philosophical subjects, from the emotions and free will to religion, ethics, and the meaning of life. The Jamesian Mind covers the major aspects of James’s thought, from his early influences to his legacy, with over forty chapters by an outstanding roster of international contributors. It is organized into seven parts: Intellectual Biography Psychology, Mind, and Self Ethics, Religion, and Politics Method, Truth, and Knowledge Philosophical Encounters Legacy. In these sections fundamental topics are examined, including James’s conceptions of philosophical and scientific inquiry, habit, self, free will and determinism, pragmatism, truth, and pluralism. Considerable attention is also devoted to James in relation to the intellectual traditions of empiricism and Romanticism as well as to such other philosophical schools as utilitarianism, British idealism, Logical Empiricism, and existentialism. James’s thought is also situated in an interdisciplinary context, including modernism, sociology, and politics, showcasing his legacy in psychology and ethics.
