Exploring English Lyrics is the most unified collection of English art texts with transcriptions available, containing 790 unique art song selections with pronunciation as defined by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). It is an invaluable resource for both the native speaking singer and singers with no previous exposure to the English language. These lyrics span nearly 500 years of art song history with texts set by more than 129 composers. Diverse segments of British, American, African American, Canadian, Scottish, Irish, and Australian cultures are represented. The scope of the lyrics selected includes works appropriate for beginners as well as those being performed by the world’s most prominent professional singers. Texts of frequently performed songs from the Royal Conservatory of Music Development Program adjudications, new composers’ collected works, as well as lyrics from major anthologies such as Joan Boytim’s First Book series are included. Detailed indications for selections that require a particular dialect or character voice pronunciation are provided. Helpful indices enable the reader to search by composer, song cycle, first line, or song title. References to settings of texts by multiple composers are indicated throughout the book. The book assists the teacher with repertoire selections while giving the student an accurate and elegant pronunciation that is ideal for intelligibility and optimal singing technique. Knowledge of the phonetic system and detailed pronunciation of new and standard repertoire are readily accessible with this text.

Over the past 30 years, musicologists have produced a remarkable new body of research literature focusing on the lives and careers of women composers in their socio-historical contexts. But detailed analysis and discussion of the works created by these composers are still extremely rare. This is particularly true in the domain of music theory, where scholarly work continues to focus almost exclusively on male composers. Moreover, while the number of performances, broadcasts, and recordings of music by women has unquestionably grown, these works remain significantly underrepresented in comparison to music by male composers. Addressing these deficits is not simply a matter of rectifying a scholarly gender imbalance: the lack of knowledge surrounding the music of female composers means that scholars, performers, and the general public remain unfamiliar with a large body of exciting repertoire. Analytical Essays on Music by Women Composers: Concert Music, 1960-2000 is the first to appear in a groundbreaking four-volume series devoted to compositions by women across Western art music history. Each chapter opens with a brief biographical sketch of the composer before presenting an in-depth critical-analytic exploration of a single representative composition, linking analytical observations with questions of meaning and sociohistorical context. Chapters are grouped thematically by analytical approach into three sections, each of which places the analytical methods used in the essays that follow into the context of late twentieth-century ideas and trends. Featuring rich analyses and critical discussions, many by leading music theorists in the field, this collection brings to the fore repertoire from a range of important composers, thereby enabling further exploration by scholars, teachers, performers, and listeners.

Many Pathways for Discovery is a manual for metadata practitioners learning music cataloging for the first time, as well as a ready reference tool for more experienced practitioners. It is intended to serve as a companion guide to general music cataloging instruction, focusing on what has traditionally been considered the more advanced skillset of “subject analysis.” It provides guidance for answering the “W-questions” about music content: What is it? (genre/form); What is it for, or, How is it performed? (medium of performance); Who is it by and Who is it for? (demographic aspects); When was it created? (chronological aspects); Where was it created? (geographic aspects) This book is primarily geared toward a metadata environment based on MARC 21 encoding and on vocabularies developed by the Library of Congress, namely, the Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT), the Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT), and the Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT). Comparisons to legacy practices involving Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are included. Additional chapters address encoding of faceted descriptors in Linked Data environments, and on discovery possibilities for end users. A bibliography of foundational and supplemental resources is provided.
