Excerpt from Concord and Its Points of Interest The history of Concord as a city dates from 1853, for it was on the tenth of March in that year that the city charter was adopted, it having been granted July 6, 1849, and rejected three times by popular vote, finally being accepted by a majority of 269 in a total vote of 1387. The history of the parish and town is of deep interest but does not properly come within the scope of the present work, which deals especially with the Concord of today and may be considered as a sort of appendix to the complete, authoritative and admirable history of Concord from 1725 to 1853, written by the Rev. Nathaniel Bouton and published in 1856. This is a standard work whose value steadily increases with the passage of time, and we wish here to express our obligations to it for many of the facts presented in the introductory sketch, which by summarizing Concord's development in the past may lead to a more complete understanding of her probable growth in the future. The "History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties," published by J. W. Lewis & Co., of Philadelphia, in 1885, has also been of great service by reason of its clear presentation of facts concerning Concord's later history, and it is to be regretted that the necessarily high cost of that handsomely and substantially gotten up volume of nearly 1000 pages should prevent a copy of it from being owned by every family in the large and important section of which it treats so interestingly and accurately. Excerpt from Old Concord The points of chief interest in the historical and literary associations of Old Concord, may also be depended upon for its accuracy. Its historical mat ter I have drawn from the Concord histories of Lemuel Shattuck (1835) and Charles H. Walcott from the Concord Social Circle Memoirs, from the writings of Grindall Reynolds, and from the publications of the Concord Antiquarian Soci ety, chiefly those by the late George Tolman. For facts concerning Concord's literary notables I have drawn principally upon their own writings. Thebook also contains material from Concord tradition and family knowledge, not to be found in print. For help in verifying my statements, and for supply ing me with much matter previously unknown to me, I am much indebted to my neighbors Dr. Edward Waldo Emerson, Judge Prescott Keyes, and Mr. Adams Tolman. I am also greatly obliged for the courteous help of the librarians of the Concord Free Public Library, and I desire to express my thanks for permission to quote directly from the publications. Excerpt from Souvenir and Guide to Historic Concord and Lexington The site of this is well marked in many places throughout the town by means of monuments, tablets and stones. Perhaps the most notable of these is the Minute Man, a magnificent bronze, designed by Daniel French, a Concord boy, and marking as nearly as possible the spot where the sturdy farmers stood in their first attack. A reminder, too, of this may be seen in the old jones House which bears the mark of a British bullet. Behind this house is the Ridge which continues nearly parallel with Monument Street and Lexington Road. Along this the Minute Men pursued the British who fled along the roadway, routing them completely as they came into the open at Meriam's Corner. No rule can be laid down by which Concord can best be seen, for there are many points of interest to one, that might not seem of great moment to another, owing to the fact that there are two distinct classes who come here those who are attracted by the purely historic and those to whom the literary shrines appeal. For convenience, however, the publisher of this book has arranged the following routes all of which may best be started from Monument Square. Excerpt from The Story of Concord: Told by Concord Writers The Editor has no apology to make for the miscellaneous character of this volume. She has tried to depict briefly the history of Concord from the Plantation to the present time, as presented in the writings of its own inhabitants. Whether their residence in Concord has been long or short, it has been long enough for some part of the life of the town to be seen and reflected from their own angle of vision. The reader must himself focus the rays to see a true picture of this model New England town. Acknowledgement is due for kind assistance given in the preparation of the work to Mr. Frank B. Sanborn, Judge John S. Keyes, Mr. Frank Preston Stearns, Mrs. Daniel Lothrop, Mr. George Tolman, Mr. Winfred D. Hubbard, The Concord Social Circle, The Concord Antiquarian Society and the librarians of the Concord Public Library. Excerpt from Springfield and Concord Delivered by a Southern Statesman, which has only quite recently been published in England,1 and which contains an admirable summary of the situation, as it now stands in America, between the two races. The justness and directness with which the Speaker reviews the historical and legislative facts which have placed the negro in his 'present social position is only equalled by the broad spirit and fine moral temper that pervades it throughout. Addressed, as I presume it is, by a Southerner to Southerners, it undoubtedly emphasises distinctions between racial pride and racial ostracism or persecution which an enquiry conducted purely with a view to humanitarian principles might at least consider as open to criticism; but it is full of instruction and worthy of the best traditions of American statesman ship. Among many points of interest the speaker more particularly dwells on the fact (pp. 27-30) that the population argument, namely, that the white race would be swamped by the black, has been entirely falsified by the statistics of the decade between 1880 and 1890. And the scathing indictment he directs against the attempts now being made in several states to exclude the freedman from representation by that which is in reality a fraudulent administration of the law (p. Is very notable indeed. The powers that fight against inquiry are as strong now as they ever were when Las Casas first devoted the life of a hero to the amelioration of the lot of the Indian races.
