Gaited horses are gaining in popularity in the sport of endurance. But what is the difference between these breeds and the other more popular breed? Do we have to do something different in order to compete with them? Who better to tackle this question than life-long rider-trainer of Tennessee Walking Horses, Ms. Reed. Improving condition comes with interval training, a technique illustrated in detail with numerous graphs, showing heart rate recordings from the workouts of 4 horses during interval training in the heat. One 26 mile workout is shown, then the before and after graphs of this horse are compared, showing scientifically, that this method works to lower working heart rate and get faster recoveries. All this can be done with a few simple tools and the workbook graph pages provided to print out. Morgan has had horses most of her life. At age 5, she moved with her family to an 800 acre cattle ranch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. There she rode and trained horses as her passion. Now years later, she trains horses and rides in endurance competition. Her horses are bred and trained by herself, and are almost exclusively Tennessee Walking Horses. A few years ago cancer threatened her life. But now on the mend she is riding and training again, and preparing to enter competition again and perhaps tackle the Tevis Cup once again soon. This work book for training the gaited horse for endurance is a natural for her. this is how she got, with very little means, a big Tennessee Walking horse mare to a handful of 50 mile endurance rides and the 100 mile Tevis cup on a shoe string budget. It can be done, although it wasn't easy. She wrote this book to help others be successful with their gaited horses, too. To pass on her experience even though she might not be able to compete again herself.

This information-packed international bestseller should be on every endurance and competitive trail rider's shelf. To spend hour after hour on the back of a horse is a dream come true for many riders. To ride for miles--25, 50, or even 100--on a fit horse, is an extremely satisfying experience, whether done in competition or just for pleasure. This thrill does not come easily however; it requires immense dedication from the rider and a lot of hard work from the horse. No other equestrian sports demand such a continuous training effort as do endurance and competitive distance riding. To reach the highest level of the sports--competing in a 100-mile ride--requires years of careful conditioning. Even a 25-mile ride demands close attention to every nuance of a horse's being--during the many miles of work beforehand and during the competition itself. It is the horse's welfare that must come above all else.

The go-to reference for riders and trainers aiming to improve equine conditioning in ways that are strategic, engaging, and fair to the horse. For just about everything we do with horses—from trail riding to top level competition—a healthy state of fitness is key to both performance and longevity. Every horse will go better for longer if his mind and body are well prepared for the “ask.” When it comes to improving fitness, whether for humans or animals, the success of an exercise relies on dosage. How an exercise is applied, the duration and frequency of execution, and the weekly schedule within which it is incorporated determine its impact on fitness. Equine training and conditioning expert Jec Aristotle Ballou has now provided a book that takes the guesswork out of fitness gains. It clarifies how long and frequently to do a particular exercise and provides guidance in how to combine it with others for best results. The result is maximized health and athleticism in the horse. The 33 workouts in these pages help accomplish the performance goals that many riders strive for but fall short of reaching—stronger, more agile, and more balanced horses. They do this by circumventing the tension, both physical and mental, that often spoils conditioning attempts made within a discipline-specific or skill-based training session. By providing the right amount of stimulus while avoiding boredom, fatigue, and habituated neuromuscular patterns, Ballou’s workouts lead to positive physiological gains. Her plans include: Ways to measure a horse’s current fitness. Guidelines for active and passive rest. Basics for stretching, warming up, and improving mobility. Unique groundwork that keeps both you and your horse engaged. Hill hikes and terrain tests with multiple benefits. Suggested schedules for basic fitness goals, as well as special considerations for young horses and trail riders. With easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions and clear illustration, this book is a fundamental piece of any conscientious rider’s training plan and a key component to keeping horses performing happily for more years of their lives.

First Star to the Right and Straight on Till Morning.... At the 90-mile vet check she sat in the middle of the road crying, claiming extreme illness and trying to avoid her nightmarish fears her horse would die of founder or colic, or anything. The last ten miles of trail stretched forever in her mind, black like licorice taffy. After a large measure of TLC from her patient and understanding crew, she and the gelding were out of the check and on the trail again. The entire universe shrank to center on the pair in the moonlight. Time stopped and the world faded into nothingness. They were running in a small, ever-changing pocket of existence, the rhythm of his hooves, the heartbeat of that universe. Ribbons and trail appeared before them and lost substance as they moved past. For the rider, clinging to the saddle, there was no thought, no pain, no emotion, only the instinctive drive to chase past each ribbon as it appeared. Suddenly her horse jumped sideways, eyes and ears frozen forward. Awakened from her trance, she oriented herself on his suspected woods troll, a familiar embankment that meant they were a half-mile from home. Easing him past the scary object, she sent the gelding on, clinging to his neck. As his soft lope swept them across the finish line, she wanted to laugh out loud or cry, but was unable to summon the strength for either. A few small tears trickled down her cheek, the only sign of the enormous pride she felt inside.
