Ethnoecology has blossomed in recent years into an important science because of the realization that the vast body of knowledge contained in both indigenous and folk cultures is being rapidly lost as natural ecosystems and cultures are being destroyed by the encroachment of development. Ethnobotany and ethnozoology both began largely with direct observations about the ways in which people used plants and animals and consisted mainly of the compilation of lists. Recently, these subjects have adopted a much more scientific and quantitative methodology and have studied the ways in which people manage their environment and, as a consequence, have used a much more ecological approach. This manual of ethnobotanical methodology will become an essential tool for all ethnobiologists and ethnoecologists. It fills a significant gap in the literature and I only wish it had been available some years previously so that I could have given it to many of my students. I shall certainly recommend it to any future students who are interested in ethnoecology. I particularly like the sympathetic approach to local peoples which pervades this book. It is one which encourages the ethnobotanical work by both the local people themselves and by academically trained researchers. A study of this book will avoid many of the arrogant approaches of the past and encourage a fair deal for any group which is being studied. This manual promotes both the involvement oflocal people and the return to them of knowledge which has been studied by outsiders.

Conducting Research in Conservation is the first textbook on social science research methods written specifically for use in the expanding and increasingly multidisciplinary field of environmental conservation. The first section on planning a research project includes chapters on the need for social science research in conservation, defining a research topic, methodology, and sampling. Section two focuses on practical issues in carrying out fieldwork with local communities, from fieldwork preparation and data collection to the relationships between the researcher and the study community. Section three provides an in-depth focus on a range of social science methods including standard qualitative and quantitative methods such as participant observation, interviewing and questionnaires, and more advanced methods, such as ethnobiological methods for documenting local environmental knowledge and change, and participatory methods such as the ‘PRA’ toolbox. Section four then demonstrates how to analyze social science data qualitatively and quantitatively; and the final section outlines the writing-up process and what should happen after the end of the formal research project. This book is a comprehensive and accessible guide to social science research methods for students of conservation related subjects and practitioners trained in the natural sciences. It features practical worldwide examples of conservation-related research in different ecosystems such as forests; grasslands; marine and riverine systems; and farmland. Boxes provide definitions of key terms, practical tips, and brief narratives from students and practitioners describe the practical issues that they have faced in the field.

Botanical wisdom of indigenous peoples has led to discoveries of new pharmaceuticals, chemical compounds, and a myriad of other products. Using riveting stories of fieldwork in remote villages, two of the world's leading ethnobotanists argue that the very roots of human culture are deeply intertwined with plants. One out of four prescription drugs, for example, was discovered from plants used by indigenous peoples for healing. Today ethnobotanical searches for new remedies for Alzheimer's, ALS, and other neurodegenerative illnesses are proceeding at a rapid pace. However, rapid changes in diets of indigenous peoples are linked to increasing levels of diabetes and arteriosclerosis. Yet this understanding of indigenous diets can possibly lead to new strategies for preventing and treating disease. The wisdom of indigenous shipwrights and weavers provides further evidence of the botanical sophistication of indigenous peoples, as does the shaman's use of plants as a doorway into the other world--a realm populated by both angelic and demonic beings. Indigenous claims that plants themselves are sacred leads to a startling reconsideration of biological conservation. The authors, who have spent decades in remote villages argue that rain forest conservation can best be accomplished by learning from, rather than opposing, indigenous peoples. * A highly readable narrative that encourages the user to personally engage with the relationship between plants, people, and culture * Full-color illustrations throughout--including many original photographs captured by the authors during field work * New to this edition--Plants that Harm, a chapter that examines the toxicology of plant poisons, but also the remarkable modification and re-appropriation of these compounds for use in treating disease and addiction * A wealth of useful references and further reading at the end of each chapter * Boxed features on selected topics that offer further insight * Study questions for students to facilitate classroom discussions Designed for the college classroom as well as for the general lay reader, Plants, People, and Culture, Second Edition, entices the reader with first-hand stories of fieldwork, spectacular illustrations, and a deep respect for both indigenous peoples and the earth's natural heritage.

The Higaonons are one of the 18 non-Muslim indigenous peoples of Mindanao. There are few ethnographic studies done on this tribe and this is the first ethnopharmacy study on a Philippine indigenous group. An ethnobotanical study from October 2008 to August 2009 of Higaonon tribe members of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental was conducted using a semi-structured questionaire. Twenty six (26) tribe members : 14 males and 12 females with a mean age of 44 use herbal medicines for its effectiveness (58%) and contributed their traditional knowledge to their parents (65%). A total of 107 plants were recorded belonging to 66 families, 92 spicies and 85 genera. The common families in the study were Euphorbiaceae (10spp.), Asteraceae (9 spp.) and Moraceae (7 spp.). The predominant growth habits of the plants were trees and herbaceous (37%). The plant parts most utilized were leaves (47%) and roots (27%). The preferred modes of preparation were decoction (38%) and as poultice (23%). Remedies were mainly administered orally (55%) topically (39%). Fifty-four (54) illnesses/conditions documented were classified into 14 body systems/use categories. The digestive system has the most number of use-report for particular illnesses/conditions (24%) and the biggest percentage of plants used (36%). Ethnobotanical indices were applied for data analyses: informant consensus factor (ICF), use value (UV), and fidelity level (FL). The respiratory system has the highest ICF (0.42) and ranked first as the priority for preferred species for ethnopharmacological evaluation. After a series of criteria, the researcher decide to work on Homalomena philippines Engl. ARACEAE (FL=60% and UV=1.67 commonly known as Payau (Vis). The voucher specimen of Homalomena philippines Engl. was prepared. Phytochemical study of the crude aqueous extract showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, reducing sugars, saponins and tannins. A 5000 mg/kg body weight crude extract did not exhibit any toxic manifestations even after 14 days and deemed practically non-toxic. There were no significant micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes formed after 24 and 48 hours administration. Preliminary antitussive evaluation using the Ohygara method of sulfur dioxide (SO2)-induced cough showed the extract to have potential anti-cough effect.
