This historical mystery contains two stories which gradually merge into one. One occurs during 2011, while the other takes place in 1863 during the height of the Civil War. In 2011, after moving to South Carolina, Paul Waring, a retired Connecticut state trooper, and his wife start their new life. Soon after moving, Paul makes a startling discovery. He discovers the remains of a long-forgotten Confederate soldier, along with several Civil War artifacts. Those artifacts include two glass bottles containing several clues he must decipher. Paul determines that one clue concerns the whereabouts of the lost Confederate treasury; a treasury largely comprised of gold and silver coins. He later discovers much of this gold was stolen from the United States government at the outbreak of the Civil War.

On the night of April 2/3, 1865, a train left Richmond carrying the gold and silver from the Confederate Treasury, perhaps worth $370,000, as well as $450,000 in gold and silver from a group of Richmond banks. The train roughly followed the escape route of Jefferson Davis and his cabinet - sometimes ahead of Davis, and sometimes behind. By the time the treasure cache reached Washington, Georgia, the Confederate Treasury was depleted. We'll examine in some detail what happened to the gold and silver along the way. The Richmond bank specie fared better up to that point, arriving more or less intact. But this would change radically on May 24, 1865 when Confederate parolees hijacked the Richmond bank gold as it was being shipped from Washington, GA back to Richmond. While some of that gold was recovered, there is still about $140,000 (1865 dollars) missing. This book will tell the tale of the last days of the Confederate Treasury, and the lost gold and silver of the Richmond Banks. The book contains 44 illustrations.

Life isn't easy in the 1860s on the western frontier as the discovery of gold and silver beckons prospectors, and the promise of cheap land attracts ranchers and farmers from the East Coast. It is a time of greed, lawlessness, self-preservation, and opportunity. The wayward Tom Lawson seizes the moment when he discovers a cache of silver near the town of Ribera in southern Arizona, between El Paso and Tucson. When the Lawson family receives word of Tom's silver strike, his brother Ben must decide whether to begin his medical career as planned or assist his brother. Reluctant but enticed, Ben moves from Colorado to Arizona to help his sibling. On the stagecoach ride from El Paso to Ribera, he and the other passengers are robbed. It becomes all too evident that the territory is under constant threat by Indians, renegade discharged Confederate soldiers, and disenfranchised Mexicans. Gold, Silver, and Guns follows the stories of Ben and five others who migrate to Ribera seeking adventure and fortune. As they discover that life in this agitated small town may pose challenges and risks far greater than the rewards, they each must weigh the price of what it takes to survive and prosper.

This is a book about two men that have searched a lifetime for the "Lost Confederate Gold." Each of us started our quest at an early age. I, myself; I started when I was five years old in 1959. At first, I was interested in just finding coins. After a rainstorm I would go out and search the ground where rainwater had run off the roof of our home thereby cutting a deep ditch into the grass. I was rewarded with a few pennies or even a nickel. My partner, Edward "Bubba" Powers started when he was only eight years old. While searching around an old home he found snuff cans containing silver dollars. We both took separate paths researching and searching for lost treasures. Along about 1996, J. Frank Carroll, a Danville, Virginia native wrote a book entitled, "Confederate Gold in Danville." I bought Mr. Carroll's book on New Year's Eve 1997. Edward Powers, or Bubba as he likes to be called, he and I brushed each other in meetings with J. Frank Carroll and while searching for the Confederate Gold. We were never introduced, and rumors were spread by J. Frank Carroll to keep us from meeting one another. Later, on March 3, 2008, J. Frank Carroll passed away. I searched on the Internet and was able to get Bubba's phone number. I called to let him know about J. Frank Carroll's passing away. We talked for over an hour and on this self-same day, even though 125 miles separated our homes, we became partners searching for the "Lost Confederate Gold." This story, is how we did that, what we learned, what we found, and what is left to be found... Oklahoma keeps its secrets. Adventurers combing the Wichita Mountains for the legendary Lost Cave with an Iron Door can slake their thirst at Cache Creek or Treasure Lake. Following the tradition of French and Spanish explorers, miners and pioneers stashed their valuable discoveries along the Santa Fe Trail and the California Road. Chief Opothleyahola reportedly buried gold coins that could be worth more than $14 million today, while businessman Dr. John J. Hayes never returned from a Confederate refugee camp to reclaim his hidden fortune. From the unrecovered loot of the James Gang to the fabled funds of the Knights of the Golden Circle, W. Craig Gaines tracks tales of treasure across sixty Oklahoma counties.
