Before there were churches, mosques, the Bible, or the Qur'an, Africans used the traditional values handed down from their ancestors to deal with conflict. These values were rooted in the concepts of togetherness and in community building and preserving. When the Bible and the Qur'an were introduced in Africa, the values and the ethics contained in these religious works were found to be compatible with traditional thought and were applied by Africans to complement their indigenous conflict-transformation skills. Fidele Lumeya shares with other Africanists the belief that African religion cannot be viewed as an anti-Judeo-Christian religion; rather, it is a lens Africans use to understand and interpret the world and God, who is unseen but whose presence is sensed. On conflict and peacebuilding issues, African religion integrates the values found in the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. This book explores the peacebuilding ethic of African religion from an Afro-Christian perspective.

Leadership And Conflict In African Churches written by Mkunga H. P. Mtingele and has been published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Anglican Communion categories.

Leadership and Conflict in African Churches: The Anglican Experience investigates the involvement of leadership and conflict in the African church. Mkunga H. P. Mtingele's previous work with the government as a state attorney and his leadership positions in the Anglican Church gave him sufficient exposure and experience to witness the increase of conflict arising from leadership, not only in the Anglican Church of Tanzania, but also in other denominations and organizations in Tanzania, Africa, and beyond. This book highlights and encourages people to understand that conflict is a social phenomenon, endemic and inevitable part of life, the causes of which must be comprehended. This book intends to get rid of the negative perception which many people have that conflicts are an inherent menace, which should be avoided. Conflict is constructive or destructive depending on one's perception as well as the level it has reached. Tools of analysis used can be applicable to different situations both in secular and religious institutions, organizations, and governments. Leadership and Conflict in African Churches is intended to contribute to, and encourage, a wider debate on conflict about leadership. Scholars and general interest groups alike will find specific use in the areas of management, leadership, conflict resolution, theology, religious studies, and social research methodology disciplines.

This volume provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary account of the scholarship on religion, conflict, and peacebuilding. Looking far beyond the traditional parameters of the field, the contributors engage deeply with the legacies of colonialism, missionary activism, secularism, orientalism, and liberalism as they relate to the discussion of religion, violence, and nonviolent transformation and resistance. Featuring numerous case studies from various contexts and traditions, the volume is organized thematically into five different parts. It begins with an up-to-date mapping of scholarship on religion and violence, and religion and peace. The second part explores the challenges related to developing secularist theories on peace and nationalism, broadening the discussion of violence to include an analysis of cultural and structural forms. In the third section, the chapters explore controversial topics such as religion and development, religious militancy, and the freedom of religion as a keystone of peacebuilding. The fourth part locates notions of peacebuilding in spiritual practice by focusing on constructive resources within various traditions, the transformative role of rituals, youth and interfaith activism in American university campuses, religion and solidarity activism, scriptural reasoning as a peacebuilding practice, and an extended reflection on the history and legacy of missionary peacebuilding. The volume concludes by looking to the future of peacebuilding scholarship and the possibilities for new growth and progress. Bringing together a diverse array of scholars, this innovative handbook grapples with the tension between theory and practice, cultural theory, and the legacy of the liberal peace paradigm, offering provocative, elastic, and context-specific insights for strategic peacebuilding processes.
