"Conflicto y armonías de las razas en América" es, quizá, el libro más controvertido de Sarmiento. En él declara que los indios no piensan porque no están preparados para ello, y los blancos españoles habían perdido el hábito de ejercitar el cerebro como órgano. Por el contrario, describe a un pueblo estadounidense exento de toda mezcla con razas inferiores en energía, conservadas sus tradiciones políticas, sin que se degraden con la adopción de las ineptitudes de raza para el gobierno. Varios son los factores que confluyen en la redacción de ésta, su última obra: la influencia de Spencer, Taine y el darwinismo; las luchas civiles de 1880 en Argentina; el paulatino abandono de las instituciones y programas educativos que él mismo inició, y el haber atestiguado la guerra de Secesión y el final administrativo de la esclavitud en Estados Unidos. Sin buscarlo, por considerar referencias tan disímiles, construyó un contraejemplo que, al final, se ve forzado a aceptar el carácter mestizo de América Latina, aunque su objetivo fuera denunciar la presencia de este elemento [étnico]. La presente edición sigue la publicada por "La cultura argentina" en 1915, con una valiosa introducción de José Bengoa y un apéndice con correspondencia del autor que explica sus motivaciones.
