Oggetto del libro è il concetto neoplatonico di contrazione dell’Uno (contractio nel suo duplice movimento di explicatio dell’uno nei molti e di complicatio, ossia di riconcentrazione dei molti nell’Uno) nella sua formulazione cusaniana. Esso intende mostrare come questa si disponga sotto il segno della congetturalità del sapere, cioè del carattere insuperabilmente ipotetico dell’interrogazione del senso dell’esperienza: nel congetturalismo cusaniano si riannoda e si rilancia, proiettandosi verso i suoi sviluppi in età moderna e contemporanea, l’antico e fecondo incontro del platonismo con lo scetticismo. La rivisitazione della filosofia cusaniana è condotta in un confronto ideale con Eriugena, all’indietro, e con Leibniz, in avanti. Emerge così che la dialettica della contrazione è contraddistinta da tre connotazioni fondamentali: l’indivisibilità degli individui autocoscienti; il carattere contingente e finalistico della condizione umana; la centralità della potenza, quale motore della contrazione.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between pantheism and ecology, particularly considering different cultural approaches and diverse religious, theological, and philosophical traditions. Environmental ethics arises from the dangerousness and harmfulness of human beings with respect to nonhuman species and, more generally, with respect to the environment. A common starting point for environmental ethics standpoints is that human beings are responsible for damaging nature. The famous four laws of ecology drafted by Barry Commoner precisely express this guilt on the part of human beings, who very often voluntarily violate the behavioral indications that emerge from nature itself. These aspects concern environmental ethics outlooks. Eco-theology, then, takes a further step: not only do we damage the ecosystem but also, as many authors suggest, when we humans destroy the natural world, we are wounding God. Such an idea implies a possible coincidence of God with the natural world –or the ecosystem. From this assumption, different questions may emerge: what is the kind of coincidence between God and the natural world? Are God and the ecosystem coextensive? If so, are we re-sacralizing the natural world and grounding intrinsic values in theological postulates and statements? These questions lead us to reconsider the cosmological assumptions that ground our environmental judgements, from theology to different religious traditions and cultures to philosophical worldviews. In particular, we will focus on the cosmological assumptions of pantheism (considering its differences with panentheism), discussing the symmetrical (or asymmetrical) relationships between God and the finite ways in which God manifests Godself. In this regard, the book is divided into three main parts: in the first part, the question of pantheism is approached from different traditions and with a special focus on the main thinkers in the history of thought, from Greek Stoicism to the present day. In the second part, some current ecological concerns are considered in relation to pantheistic cosmology: the authors will deepen issues from the discussion of the different “pan-conceptions” to the problem of evil, to Anthropocene. Finally, in the third part, the different chapters will focus on ethical issues in the field of the current environmental crisis with a huge connection with the pantheistic cosmologies. This book is oriented to a wide public, interested in environmental issues and looking for an approach from different cultures and traditions. Evidently, due to its “academic” nature, this book is also intended to be a great support for researchers interested in eco-theology and, more specifically, in the relationship between pantheism and ecology. It is not, in this sense, a “classic” book on environmental ethics, but a book that delves into the fundamentals of environmental philosophy, privileging the Ibero-American approach.

The volume focuses on the relation between Cusanus and Aristotle or the Aristotelian tradition. In recent years the attention on this topic has partially increased, but overall the scholarship results are still partial or provisional. The book thus aims at verifying more systematically how Aristotle and Aristotelianism have been received by Cusanus, in both their philosophical and theological implications, and how he approached the Aristotelian thought. In order to answer these questions, the papers are structured according to the traditional Aristotelian sciences and their reflection on Cusanus' thought. This allows to achieve some aspects of interest and originality: 1) the book provides a general, but systematic analysis of Aristotle's reception in Cusanus' thought, with some coherent results. 2) Also, it explores how a philosopher and theologian traditionally regarded as Neoplatonist approached Aristotle and his tradition (including Thomas Aquinas), what he accepted of it, what he rejected, and what he tried to overcome. 3) Finally, the volume verifies the attitude of a relevant Christian philosopher and theologian of the Humanistic age towards Aristotle.

At the end of the nineteenth century, German theologians and philosophers rediscovered the Renaissance cardinal Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464). Immediately they hailed Cusanus as the first modern thinker, a brilliant German rival to the French Descartes. But since the founding of the Cusanus critical edition in 1927 up to its conclusion in 2005, historians have gradually learned that Nicholas was more of a medieval preacher and contemplative than a modern philosopher. Yet over the same century, modern German and French readers were already digging into Nicholas's many works. There they encountered an exciting voice with fresh perspectives about God's immanence in the cosmos and the awesome capacities of the human mind. Leading philosophers and theologians from Erich Przywara to Karl Jaspers to Hans-Georg Gadamer, and from Gilles Deleuze to Jacques Lacan to Michel de Certeau, found their own thinking stimulated by the cardinal's innovative concepts and interdisciplinary style. Il volume approfondisce, da un alto, il dialogo che Nicolò Cusano (1401-1464) ha intrattenuto con alcuni maestri della tradizione filosofica (come Platone, Aristotele, Proclo, Dionigi Areopagita, Giovanni Scoto, Eckhart) e, dall’altro, le riflessioni che alcuni pensatori contemporanei (in particolare Pareyson e Beierwaltes) hanno sviluppato nelle loro letture della sua opera. Intrecciando queste due dimensioni, il lavoro intende evidenziare le profondità teoretiche della speculazione cusaniana, sviluppando sia la felice intuizione di Luigi Pareyson, secondo cui il filosofo tedesco sarebbe tra quei pensatori che hanno elaborato una concezione dell’Uno come libertà, sia la tesi di Werner Beierwaltes, relativa all’eccedenza dell’henologia cusaniana rispetto a quella tradizione di pensiero che Heidegger ha denominato criticamente “onto-teologia”.
