The true story of a German-Jewish love that overcame the burdens of the past. Finalist for the 2017 Book of the Year Award by the Chicago Writers Association “A book that is hard to put down.” —Jerusalem Post “This book confirms Annette Gendler as an indispensable Jewish voice for our time." —Yossi Klein Halevi, author of Like Dreamers "The ghosts of the past haunt a woman’s search for herself in this thoughtful, poignant memoir about the transformative power of love and faith.” —Hillary Jordan, author of Mudbound, now a Netflix movie “An exquisitely written conversion story which expounds upon personal and collective identity.” —Washington Independent Review of Books “A compelling, gracefully written memoir about the impact of the past on the present.” —Michael Steinberg, author of Still Pitching History was repeating itself when Annette fell in love with Harry, a Jewish man, the son of Holocaust survivors, in Germany in 1985. Her Great-Aunt Resi had been married to a Jew in Czechoslovakia before World War II―a marriage that, while happy, put the entire family in mortal danger once the Nazis took over their hometown in 1938. Annette and Harry’s love, meanwhile, was the ultimate nightmare for Harry’s family. Not only was their son considering marrying a non-Jew, but a German. Weighed down by the burdens of their family histories, Annette and Harry kept their relationship secret for three years, until they could forge a path into the future and create a new life in Chicago. Annette found a spiritual home in Judaism―a choice that paved the way toward acceptance by Harry’s family, and redemption for some of the wounds of her own family’s past.

There is a growing hunger and dare I say yearning in many melanated people in the US and beyond to connect to our previously unknown ancestral roots. Like them, I have often wondered where I connect on the African continent. So I ventured out to answer that question. In Nov 2013, I took my first trip to Africa, specifically Nigeria. The people told me that I looked like I was from the Igbo and Yoruba people, two of the largest people groups (also known as tribes) in Nigeria, the largest country on the African continent. The visit was only ten days that went by too fast, leaving me yearning to return, but it would be six long years and a divorce before I was able to set my feet on African soil again. Found My People is the inspirational story of how one African American connected to his ancestral roots and the revolutionary way that decision has immeasurably changed and enriched his life! Much more than that it is also a guide for all who want to connect to the roots and culture that has been hidden in your blood since you were born! When the screams of innocents dying engulf you, how do you hear God's voice? Will God and God's people call you to life when your breath is being strangled out of you? For people of color living each day surrounded by violence, for whom survival is not a given, vocational discernment is more than "finding your purpose" - it's a matter of life and death. Patrick Reyes shares his story of how the community around him - his grandmother, robed clergy, educators, friends, and neighbors - saved him from gang life, abuse, and the economic and racial oppression that threatened to kill him before he ever reached adulthood. A story balancing the tension between pain and healing, Nobody Cries When We Die takes you to the places that make American society flinch, redefines what you are called to do with your life, and gives you strength to save lives and lead in your own community. Part of the FTE (Forum for Theological Exploration) Series

When we speak about the heart, we often talk about sentimental and emotional matters. Nonetheless, what I mean to explore here is the heart as a chakra, as an energy center, as an intelligence and as pure love. In the heart, one can deal with and work on all subjects. However, in this day and age, human beings are programmed and conditioned to experience life through another energy center, the mental chakra, which is also very important! Today we talk about the heart chakra as a center of energy and strength: it is a combination. This is about so much more than I can describe... We all have many bodies; you can imagine them as Russian dolls stacked inside one another. Because of our experience and because of the decisions we make as human beings, our energy will activate many of these bodies, and the heart chakra activates many others. Our personal development goes through balancing and aligning all our chakras and energy centers, and what our service here is about is to give attention to and to reach the heart chakra. This approach is very enriching, and it expands this chakra. We develop ourselves in a personal and deep way throughout our evolutionary journey. The heart chakra is very caring with us, in the true sense of the word care. First of all, it loves us, and it teaches us to find this love in ourselves. I am not talking about vanity nor narcissism; I am talking about a real, deep love, about accepting our reality and the being that we truly are.

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • An insightful look into the mind of a master storyteller—and a unique look at the craft of writing from the beloved and best-selling author of 1Q84, Norwegian Wood, and What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. "Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers" —New York Times Book Review A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK: Esquire, Vulture, LitHub, New York Observer Aspiring writers and readers who have long wondered where the mysterious novelist gets his ideas and what inspires his strangely surreal worlds will be fascinated by this engaging book from the internationally best-selling author. Haruki Murakami now shares with readers his thoughts on the role of the novel in our society; his own origins as a writer; and his musings on the sparks of creativity that inspire other writers, artists, and musicians. Here are the personal details of a life devoted to craft: the initial moment at a Yakult Swallows baseball game, when he suddenly knew he could write a novel; the importance of memory, what he calls a writer’s “mental chest of drawers”; the necessity of loneliness, patience, and his daily running routine; the seminal role a carrier pigeon played in his career and more. "What I want to say is that in a certain sense, while the novelist is creating a novel, he is simultaneously being created by the novel as well." —Haruki Murakami

Hailed by Andre Gide as the patron saint of all outsiders, Simone Weil's short life was ample testimony to her beliefs. In 1942 she fled France along with her family, going firstly to America. She then moved back to London in order to work with de Gaulle. Published posthumously The Need for Roots was a direct result of this collaboration. Its purpose was to help rebuild France after the war. In this, her most famous book, Weil reflects on the importance of religious and political social structures in the life of the individual. She wrote that one of the basic obligations we have as human beings is to not let another suffer from hunger. Equally as important, however, is our duty towards our community: we may have declared various human rights, but we have overlooked the obligations and this has left us self-righteous and rootless. She could easily have been issuing a direct warning to us today, the citizens of Century 21.
