Serve ancora la geografia? Quale senso può avere, oggi, la pretesa di fissare un territorio in una rappresentazione, di «cartografarlo»? E a cosa serve la geografia? A descrivere i luoghi su cui gli uomini «appoggiano» il loro agire, o a raccontarne le interazioni, e indagarne la storia? A fissare e legittimare lo status di quei luoghi, o a contribuire al loro cambiamento? In questo aureo libretto, che raccoglie in alcuni brevi e folgoranti saggi il percorso esemplare di quello che a buon diritto può essere considerato il più autorevole rappresentante italiano della geografia attiva, emerge una concezione della Terra in cui biosfera e sfera socio-culturale interagiscono all’interno di un medesimo sistema complesso, operando ciascuna secondo le proprie modalità. Ciò significa che, a tutti i livelli territoriali, possiamo fare scelte sbagliate, che alterano le condizioni biologiche e sociali del pianeta e che presto o tardi finiranno per ritorcersi sulle condizioni di vita dei sistemi locali. Per questo i geografi non possono limitarsi a descrivere i territori, ma devono assumersi la responsabilità di individuare e descrivere le condizioni favorevoli per instaurare rapporti virtuosi con la biosfera e, attraverso questi, rapporti sociali che riducano le diseguaglianze e gli sprechi di risorse naturali e umane a cui oggi assistiamo. Per farlo la geografia deve riaccendere quella «poetica della scoperta» che ha accompagnato le grandi esplorazioni: «la vera scoperta di Colombo – scrive Giuseppe Dematteis – non è stata l’America, ma l’idea che si potesse arrivare in India navigando verso occidente». I geografi, continua Dematteis, da sempre «fanno un pezzo di storia con i poeti: forse è per questo che gli antichi ritenevano Omero il massimo dei geografi». La geografia deve riprendere il suo cammino a fianco della poesia, recuperando così anche quella carica emotiva e affettiva che è necessaria per stabilire un corretto rapporto con i luoghi e con chi ci vive. Solo «un’immaginazione poetica che attinga al fondo oscuro e brulicante della vita potrà veramente suggerire la molteplicità dei bisogni e dei desideri che possono concorrere alla costruzione del territorio come bene comune», scovare, nascoste sotto le false necessità, «le condizioni di un divenire possibile».
