El trabajo "Principios del comunismo" es un proyecto de programa de la Liga de los Comunistas. Lo escribió Engels en París por encargo del Comité Comarcal de la Liga. Sin embargo, luego de que como resultado de su II Congreso (29 de noviembre-8 de diciembre de 1847), la Liga les encargara a Marx y Engels la redacción de un programa para la Liga, los autores abandonaron la forma de catequismo que marcó la obra aquí reproducida y optaron por escribir el programa en forma de minifiesto. El resultado se conoce como el Manifiesto del Partido Comunista. Al escribirlo, los autores utilizaron las tesis expuestas por Engels en los "Principios del comunismo".El comunismo es una ideología social caracterizada por la planificación colectiva de la vida comunitaria, la abolición de la propiedad privada de los medios de producción sobre el trabajo y la eliminación de las clases sociales y el Estado. La doctrina comunista, cuya base es la colectivización de la propiedad de los medios de producción, fue fundada por los pensadores socialistas alemanes del siglo XIX Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels como una interpretación revolucionaria de la historia: un permanente conflicto por el excedente material, cuyo inicio se debe a la aparición de la propiedad que pone fin al comunismo primitivo y separa a la sociedad en clases de acuerdo a su forma de adquisición de recursos. Según el marxismo, las diferentes relaciones de producción que vinculan a los hombres requieren de la explotación, y estas relaciones generan con el tiempo las condiciones para ser reemplazadas por otras formas de explotación superiores, en una secuencia revolucionaria de modos de producción. Sin embargo, esta lucha de clases se extingue. La sociedad capitalista, entra en una crisis interna que sólo puede resolverse a través de una revolución comunista.
