Excerpt from Conscience (Conscience) About this time Hector Malot resolved not to write fiction any more. He announced this determination in a card published in the journal, Le T emps, May 25, 1895. It was then maliciously stated that M. Malot his retired from business after having accumulated a fortune. However, he took up his pen again and pub lished a history of his literary life: Le Roman de mes Romans besides two volumes of fiction, l'amour dominateur and Pages choisies works which showed that, in the language of Holy Writ, his eye was not dimmed nor his natural force abated, and afiorded him a triumph over his slanderers. Excerpt from The Man With a Conscience To-Day the perplexities of the man with a conscience may not be more vital than his difficulties of creed, but they are more distressing. Christian doctrines are with him too largely intellectual fogs or mysteries. He feels that many of his duties are matters of life and death. He will not take time in these crowded days to think Christian truths through. They seem like hazy abstractions. But in duties he is dealing with flesh and blood, with his wife and children, his everyday associates, with men and business and life. Does he wonder what to do with a wayward son? Shall he send him to college, where to the son the chief thing may be sports, excesses, and temptations, which are the mere incidents to the earnest student? Or shall he take him into business, where he will be tried as by fire in the handling of money or in assuming great responsibilities? What is he to do? Or, like the noble Christian manufacturer who told of his perplexity, he may be considering the question of lowering the wages of his already hard-pushed workingmen. I saw the committee sent by the men emerge from his office. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tongues of Conscience The arrival of darkness always meant something to the Rev. Peter Uniacke, whose cure of souls now held him far from the swarming alleys and the docks in which his early work had been done. He seldom failed to give this visitor, so strange and soft-footed, some slight greeting. Sometimes his welcome was a sigh, sometimes a prayer, some times a clenching Of the hands, a smile, a pause in his onward walk. Looking backward along his past he could see his tall figure in many different places, aware Of the first footfalls Of the night, now alone and thinking Of night's allegory of man's end, now in company, when the talk insensibly changed its character, flowing into deeper, more mysterious or confidential channels. Peter Uniacke had listened to informal confessions, too, as the night fell, confessions of sin that at first surprised him, that at last could no longer Asurprise him. And he had confessed himself, before the altar of the twilight, and had wondered why it is that some times Nature seems to have the power of absolu tion, even as God has it. Sure the justice never meant to see ye handled so. Others followed the good woman's example, howbeit by so doing they called down heavy curses from the furious soldiery who rode at the men with a wicked violence that threatened life. A boy of ten years Old or thereabouts just then came riding down the road and seeing the turmoil reined in his pony, eying keenly one face and another Of the Friends. Mr. Pixley! Are you there P I'll go for help, and, turning sharply, sped back on his tracks, halting suddenly in front of a thick-set, tall man with a boy beside him, walking leisurely along the street. Excerpt from A Study of Conscience These lectures were delivered by Bishop Ruli son in the spring of 1895. At the time of his death, he was preparing them for publication. He had intended rewriting parts of the lectures, but was unable to do so, and they are now pub lished in their original form. The concluding paragraphs of the last lecture were perhaps never written out, as they were not to be found among the Bishop's manuscripts, and in order to com plete the argument, a conclusion has been added which it is hoped is in keeping with the thought and spirit of Bishop Rulison's work. Excerpt from The Nature and Authority of Conscience The Swarthmore Lectureship was established by the Woodbrooke Extension Committee, at a meeting held December 9th, 1907: the minute of the Committee providing for "an annual lecture on some subject relating to the message and work of the Society of Friends." The name "Swarthmore" was chosen in memory of the home of Margaret Fox, which was always open to the earnest seeker after Truth, and from which loving words of sympathy and substantial material help were sent to fellow-workers. The Lectureship has a two-fold purpose: first, to interpret further to the members of the Society of Friends their Message and Mission; and, secondly, to bring before the public the spirit, the aims and the fundamental principles of the Friends. The Lectures have been delivered on the evening preceding the assembly of the Friends' Yearly Meeting in each year. The present Lecture was delivered on the evening preceding the Conference of all Friends in August, 1920. A complete list of previous Lectures, as published in book form, will be found at the beginning of this volume.
