Effective Intentions written by Alfred R. Mele and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-22 with Psychology categories.

Each of the following claims has been defended in the scientific literature on free will and consciousness: your brain routinely decides what you will do before you become conscious of its decision; there is only a 100 millisecond window of opportunity for free will, and all it can do is veto conscious decisions, intentions, or urges; intentions never play a role in producing corresponding actions; and free will is an illusion. In Effective Intentions Alfred Mele shows that the evidence offered to support these claims is sorely deficient. He also shows that there is strong empirical support for the thesis that some conscious decisions and intentions have a genuine place in causal explanations of corresponding actions. In short, there is weighty evidence of the existence of effective conscious intentions or the power of conscious will. Mele examines the accuracy of subjects' reports about when they first became aware of decisions or intentions in laboratory settings and develops some implications of warranted skepticism about the accuracy of these reports. In addition, he explores such questions as whether we must be conscious of all of our intentions and why scientists disagree about this. Mele's final chapter closes with a discussion of imaginary scientific findings that would warrant bold claims about free will and consciousness of the sort he examines in this book.

The Power Of Decision written by Raymond Charles Barker and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-06 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Introducing the first book in a powerful new series, The Tarcher Master Mind Editions: Essential Books of Inspiration, Instruction, and Motivation. What mind can conceive, man can achieve. Our decisions impact every area of our lives. Making better decisions means living a better life. But how can we develop the habit of making great decisions? Every noteworthy achievement the world has ever seen was born with a single thought; and every great man who ever lived has been a man of decision. Raymond Charles Barker's The Power of Decision reveals this principle of success and illustrates the process of choice that all of us must take-and that all of us are capable, this very second, of taking-to change our lives and make our dreams come true. Indecisive people are failure prone, and Dr. Barker examines this basic truth while exploring the decision-making process in the individual, and the role of the subconscious mind in either abetting or thwarting each of our conscious decisions. He provides specific steps to shift the balance of decision-making power in your favor, and he brings to light the constant, ever-present power of will to change a situation- and yourself-for the better. Picking up The Power of Decision is the moment; and reading it is the decision that will change your life forever.

The Nature And Function Of Intuitive Thought And Decision Making written by Lauri Järvilehto and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-09 with Psychology categories.

This book focuses on the very nature and function of intuitive thought. It presents an up-to-date scientific model on how the non-conscious and intuitive thought processes work in human beings. The model is based on mainstream theorizing on intuition, as well as qualitative meta-analysis of the empirical data available in the research literature. It combines recent work in the fields of philosophy of mind, cognitive psychology and positive psychology. While systematic research in intuition is relatively new, there is an abundance of positions advocating more or less imaginative ideas of what intuition is about, ranging from quantum mechanical phenomena to new age ideologies. Research in the past few decades, in particular by proponents of the dual processing theory of thought such as Daniel Kahneman and Jonathan Evans, offers powerful tools to address and evaluate the question of intuition without the need to resort to spiritual entities. Within the framework of the dual processing theory, backed up by findings in positive psychology, intuition turns out to be the capacity to carry out complex cognitive operations within a specific domain of operations familiar to the agent.

De La Mettrie S Ghost written by Chris Nunn and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-07 with Psychology categories.

This book is about how we make choices. It is a compelling analysis of the nature of free will, drawing together evidence from chemistry, literature, politics, history and beyond. Psychiatrist Chris Nunn elegantly explores the revolutions in medicine, genetics, bioethics and neuroscience spurred by Julien de la Mettrie's 300-year-old tract Man the Machine. Nunn concludes that a mechanistic view of the human brain, though once fruitful, is now moribund. He proposes a powerful alternative: that stories, recorded in our memories throughout life, are the mediators of free choice. Nunn demonstrates how this original approach could reconcile the latest brain-imaging results and our seemingly contradictory intuition about decision making and responsibility.

"Having an understanding of the human mind and how it functions is probably the single most important thing anyone who wants to be successful can do." We make thousands of decisions every day. In fact, research suggests that an adult brain makes on average about 35,000 remotely conscious decisions on a daily basis. When we were younger, choices were most likely simple. As we get older, our level of responsibility increases and so does the amount of choices that we are faced with on a daily basis. With ever increasing choices and responsibility at least our decision making process stays the same, right? In actuality, our decision making process is broken. It's warped and sometimes even shattered by cognitive bias. Why are we so afraid of sharks or plane crashes yet continue to do far more dangerous things? Why do we instinctively look for patterns to inform our decision making and bring meaning to our world? Why can't we listen to reason when we need it most? Join Spencer Fraseur through a journey of real stories of flawed logic and bad behavior in business (and in life) to discover what can be done to overcome the hidden forces that impact our everyday decisions.
