Mark Rowlands develops an innovative and radical account of the nature of phenomenal consciousness, with significant consequences for attempts to find a place for it in the natural order. He argues that the phenomenal aspects of conscious experience are aspects that exist only in the directing of experience towards non-phenomenal objects, a theory that undermines reductive attempts to explain consciousness in terms of what is not conscious. His book will be of interest to a wide range of readers in the philosophy of mind and language, psychology, and cognitive science.

What is a Human Being? When we think of ourselves, we think primarily of our subjective sense of self, our Consciousness, and how does it relate to our Body? Are Mind and Body one and the same thing, Monism, or two separate things, Dualism. This is the "Mind-Body Problem." It is the scientific question of how Consciousness is manifest in the structure of Brain. It is the moral questions regarding abortion and end of life. The answers require an explanation in terms of physics, metaphysics, and history. It is the discussion inside those explanatory fields that has built the gulf between popular intuitive Dualism and the expert Monism. This work presents a clear scientific Dualist model, Mind and Body, as two separate things to answer the question, 'What is a Human Being?'

Human Consciousness and Our World Order is the first book by Trevor Lloyd-Jones. He is a UK Prospective Parliamentary Candidate campaigning for political change and a better, more cooperative and more caring political discourse. We all know our world is struggling now on many levels. Yet there is no easy way around these times. In fact it has all been accurately designed, out of the darkness of our world, from the universal 'consciousness' we all share, in such a way that the light needs to come through. The pain that we all deal with, as an aware block of 'consciousness', living in the collective unconsciousness or in 'unawareness, ' is necessary right now. Nothing in the dark is not eventually brought into the light. We all need to take encouragement. Think about peace. Think about togetherness, and the world need not be the way it has always been. We are learning the truth of our interconnection over time, in a subtle way, as a valuable lesson. We are ready to move on to a new way of solving our problems. Back in the 1880s, when the Society for Psychical Research started making scientific studies of paranormal phenomena, the model of reality conceived was dictated by Newtonian physics, and in that model there was no place for phenomena that conflicted with Sir Isaac Newton's principles. But the Theory of Relativity as well as other developments in physics have shattered this model of a mechanistic and orderly universe. Today we know that classic physics became limited because it described a certain level of reality, the level that we perceive through our senses. It was not adequate to describe phenomena that take place at the sub-atomic level and which are beyond our normal perception. For a long time now parapsychology and quantum science has been studying phenomena which are a reference point to other levels of reality. What makes these observations important is that they originate from different areas of research, which on comparison, form a network of evidence pointing to new levels of reality. The nature of reality is now being questioned by scientists, from quantum physicists to parapsychologists. Albert Einstein commented on this question as follows: "The material world....constitutes the whole world of appearance, not the whole world of reality. We may think of it as forming a cross-section of the world of reality." So what has this got to do with politics and civil society? Covid, social division, fear, economic hardship? What has love got to do with it? What are the things we can know and ground ourselves with certainty? There is a groundswell of people in the world who are seeking higher wisdom. We are rich and poor, progressive and conservative, young and old. And what we share at this moment is deep concern, concern about the direction in which our planet is headed, the assaults on our democratic foundations, and the erosion of our human values and the human spirit. This book will take you on a commentary through the great philosophers and physicists, the ancient gnostic texts, the quantum dimension and the science of the human genome and the human mind, and how these relate to the world today. It comes with an important message. Humans are the masters of focusing on our own limitations. But together we can still find our way to our true purpose. 1.Introduction 2. According to Russellian monism, an alternative to the familiar theories in the philosophy of mind that combines attractive components of physicalism and dualism, matter has intrinsic properties that both constitute consciousness and serve as categorical bases for the dispositional properties described in physics. Consciousness in the Physical World collects various works on Russellian monism, including historical selections, recent classics, and new pieces. Most chapters are sympathetic with the view, but some are skeptical. Together, they constitute the first book-length treatment of the view itself, its relationship to other theories, its motivations, and its problems.

A Place For Consciousness written by Gregg Rosenberg and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-18 with Philosophy categories.

What place does consciousness have in the natural world? If we reject materialism, could there be a credible alternative? In one classic example, philosophers ask whether we can ever know what is it is like for bats to sense the world using sonar. It seems obvious to many that any amount of information about a bat's physical structure and information processing leaves us guessing about the central questions concerning the character of its experience. A Place for Consciousness begins with reflections on the existence of this gap. Is it just a psychological shortcoming in our merely human understanding of the physical world? Is it a trivial consequence of the simple fact that we just cannot be bats? Or does it mean there really are facts about consciousness over and above the physical facts? If so, what does consciousness do? Why does it exist? Rosenberg sorts out these problems, especially those centering on the causal role of consciousness. He introduces a new paradigm called Liberal Naturalism for thinking about what causation is, about the natural world, and about how to create a detailed model to go along with the new paradigm. Arguing that experience is part of the categorical foundations of causality, he shows that within this new paradigm there is a place for something essentially like consciousness in all its traditional mysterious respects. A striking feature of Liberal Naturalism is that its central tenets are motivated independently of the mind-body problem, by analyzing causation itself. Because of this approach, when consciousness shows up in the picture it is not introduced in an ad hoc way, and its most puzzling features can be explained from first principles. Ultimately, Rosenberg's final solution gives consciousness a causally important role without supposing either that it is physical or that it interacts with the physical.

Unsnarling The World Knot written by David Ray Griffin and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-25 with Philosophy categories.

The mind-body problem, which Schopenhauer called the "world-knot," has been a central problem for philosophy since the time of Descartes. Among realists--those who accept the reality of the physical world--the two dominant approaches have been dualism and materialism, but there is a growing consensus that, if we are ever to understand how mind and body are related, a radically new approach is required. David Ray Griffin develops a third form of realism, one that resolves the basic problem (common to dualism and materialism) of the continued acceptance of the Cartesian view of matter. In dialogue with various philosophers, including Dennett, Kim, McGinn, Nagel, Seager, Searle, and Strawson, Griffin shows that materialist physicalism is even more problematic than dualism. He proposes instead a panexperientialist physicalism grounded in the process philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. Answering those who have rejected "panpsychism" as obviously absurd, Griffin argues compellingly that panexperientialism, by taking experience and spontaneity as fully natural, can finally provide a naturalistic account of the emergence of consciousness--an account that also does justice to the freedom we all suppose in practice.

Cosmic Consciousness And Human Excellence written by Mahmoud Masaeli and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-29 with Philosophy categories.

Cosmoconsciousness, or cosmic consciousness, is a term used to characterize a transcendence of the limits of self-consciousness. As an ultra-state of illumination of the mind, the roots of the conception are embodied in the quest for a spiritual connection with multi-dimensional cosmos. This quest searches for spiritual development as a pathway to human excellence, and can be associated with the mystics of ancient wisdom, as well as contemporary psycho-spiritual analysts. After its emergence in the late 19th century, cosmic consciousness rapidly became a source of inspiration for transpersonal psychology, moral therapy, and a thoughtful link to mystical quantum physics. By encouraging a spiritual way of perceiving the real world, cosmic consciousness also provides a source of inspiration for human excellence as the central idea of global ethics. In this perspective, the world cannot be changed for the better without changing individual consciousness. Global concerns, including ecological issues, violence and acts of terrorism, materialistic gratification and hedonism, could not be addressed effectively unless people’s consciousness is changed. Cosmic consciousness, by the very perception of the inner life, has the potential to struggle with global concerns, and hence, it holds a promise of human excellence. This book discusses cosmic consciousness against the backdrop of the emergence of the rational and autonomous conception of the self, and the modern psychological depiction of selfhood. It places the idea of cosmic consciousness at the centre of contemporary arguments on the nature of consciousness.
