Professor L. Scott Mills has been named a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowby the board of trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim MemorialFoundation. Conservation of Wildlife Populations provides anaccessible introduction to the most relevant concepts andprinciples for solving real-world management problems in wildlifeand conservation biology. Bringing together insights fromtraditionally disparate disciplines, the book shows how populationbiology addresses important questions involving the harvest, monitoring, and conservation of wildlife populations. Covers the most up-to-date approaches for assessing factorsthat affect both population growth and interactions with otherspecies, including predation, genetic changes, harvest, introducedspecies, viability analysis and habitat loss andfragmentation. Is an essential guide for undergraduates and postgraduatestudents of wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology, andenvironmental studies and an invaluable resource for practisingmanagers on how population biology can be applied to wildlifeconservation and management. This book addresses the multidisciplinary challenges in biodiversity conservation with a focus on wildlife crime and how forensic tools can be applied to protect species and preserve ecosystems. Illustrated by numerous case studies covering different geographical regions and species the book introduces to the fundamentals of biodiversity conflicts, outlines the unique challenges of wildlife crime scenes and reviews latest techniques in environmental forensics, such as DNA metagenomics. In addition, the volume explores the socio-economic perspective of biodiversity protection and provides an overview of national and international conservation laws. The field of conservation medicine stresses the importance of recognizing that human health, animal health, and ecosystem health are inextricably interdependent and the book serves as important contribution towards achieving the UN Sustainable Developmental Goals, in particular SDG 15, Life on Land. The book addresses graduate students, scientists and veterinary professionals working in wildlife research and conservation biology.

Not everybody cares about the fate of wild animals or the state of the natural environment. I met a lady who said it wouldn't worry her if all the wild animals in the world disappeared overnight. She was a city person~ she said. There are also people who would prefer to let animals become extinct than to have them kept in captivity - no matter how progressive the zoo. There are those who, on principle, will not eat meat, let alone do the killing, and there are those who enjoy nothing so much as shooting birds. People in the last two camps may oppose each other in claiming to be con servationists. Extremists are unlikely to find their opinions being reversed by this book but, because of the scope of the subject, I believe there is a good chance that anybody with an interest in wildlife will find in it something new to think about. It may not be too much to hope that a few disagreements might also be settled because I suspect there is more common ground than is generally realized among those with opposing views.

Wildlife conservation and management is increasingly becoming a subject of great interest and value. The significance of wildlife conservation came into light few decades back when ecologists noticed the negative impacts of habitat loss and extinction of species. The destruction and degradation of different habitats of wild animals meant for their development and preservation, has led to fall in the population of various species. National parks, wildlife sanctuaries and hotspots are designed to protect wildlife on a large scale. This book focuses upon the relevance of study of conservation biology. Some of the significant concepts included in the book are wildlife ecology, morphology, genetics, and conservation practices. It aims to benefit students and academicians who are looking to explore this field.

Wildlife Conservation In A Changing Climate written by Jedediah F. Brodie and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-03 with Science categories.

Human-induced climate change is emerging as one of the gravest threats to biodiversity in history, and while a vast amount of literature on the ecological impact of climate change exists, very little has been dedicated to the management of wildlife populations and communities in the wake of unprecedented habitat changes. Wildlife Conservation in a Changing Climate is an essential resource, bringing together leaders in the fields of climate change ecology, wildlife population dynamics, and environmental policy to examine the impacts of climate change on populations of terrestrial vertebrates. Chapters assess the details of climate change ecology, including demographic implications for individual populations, evolutionary responses, impacts on movement patterns, alterations of species interactions, and predicting impacts across regions. The contributors also present a number of strategies by which conservationists and wildlife managers can counter or mitigate the impacts of climate change as well as increase the resilience of wildlife populations to such changes. A seminal contribution to the fields of ecology and conservation biology, Wildlife Conservation in a Changing Climate will serve as the spark that ignites a new direction of discussions about and action on the ecology and conservation of wildlife in a changing climate.
