La Constelacion del Sur analiza la manera en que la traduccion de literatura europea y norteamericana realizada en la Argentina durante el siglo XX asumio la funcion de elaborar un repertorio de modelos de escritura, ofrecer nuevos modos de representacion, presentar materiales narrativos atipicos en la produccion local e incluso ampliar el publico lector. La obra refleja la idea de que ninguna traduccion es transparente ni existe una perfecta equivalencia entre version y original. Las cuestiones de fidelidad o divergencia apuntan a las tensiones que surgen entre las lenguas y, mas secretamente, a las que aparecen entre los campos literarios extranjeros y el receptor. En las decadas de 1940 y 1950, las editoriales impusieron una practica de la traduccion a la vez democratica y elitista. Las obras de William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet y Graham Greene, entre otros, fueron transpuestas por el filtro de traductores-escritores como Jorge Luis Borges, Jose Bianco y Victoria Ocampo, acusados rapidamente de extranjerizantes, aun cuando la nocion misma de traduccion contradice esa imputacion.
