El 19 de marzo de 1812, en plena guerra de la independencia (1808-1814), las Cortes de Cádiz promulgaron la "Constitución Política de la Monarquía Española" a la que el pueblo denominó cariñosamente "La Pepa" por haber sido promulgada el día de San José. Sus diez títulos y 384 artículos, de marcado carácter liberal, fueron abolidos por Fernando VII al acceder de nuevo al trono en cuanto finalizó la contienda. De esta manera, el monarca restauró el absolutismo durante todo su reinado, con excepción del trienio liberal (1820-1823), un breve periodo de régimen constitucional que acabó con la intervención de los Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis y dio paso a la llamada "década ominosa" hasta su muerte en 1833. Durante la posterior regencia de María Cristina, que había estado precedida por duros enfrentamientos entre liberales y absolutistas, se mandó publicar y observar de nuevo y "en todas sus partes" la Constitución de Cádiz. Era el 15 de agosto de 1836. Ese mismo año, la Librería Nacional de Sauri, Barcelona, publicaba esta edición de "La Pepa", que ha reproducido Lex Nova con este facsímil impreso en guáflex y que conserva el curioso formato del original.
