Il volume riflette alcune delle tematiche del progetto PRIN “Rappresentazioni linguistiche dell'identità. Modelli sociolinguistici e linguistica storica” che sono state al centro di un incontro scientifico organizzato dall’Unità di Ricerca di Chieti e Pescara, tenutosi dal 29 al 31 maggio 2014. Lo scopo del volume è quello di tentare un primo e sia pur parziale bilancio dei risultati ottenuti nell’ambito della trasferibilità a fasi linguistiche del passato di principi, assunti e modelli elaborati nell’ambito della moderna sociolinguistica. I contributi raccolti in questo volume coprono aspetti diversi del contatto interlinguistico sia sul piano teorico che sul versante più strettamente applicativo. Nel primo ambito particolare attenzione è stata dedicata tanto ai modelli di riferimento, sia interni che esterni, quanto alla collocazione dei fenomeni e dei prodotti del contatto a livello di discorso e a livello di sistema. Nel secondo ambito si raccolgono una serie di studi dedicati a situazioni diverse sia dal punto di vista cronologico sia per quanto concerne i codici di volta in volta in contatto; l’arco cronologico su cui si distribuiscono i casi analizzati va dall’antichità (lingue classiche e iranico) al periodo medioevale e rinascimentale, per arrivare all’analisi di situazioni moderne, soprattutto in riferimento a varietà del diasistema romanzo. I risultati ottenuti dai diversi contributi raccolti nel volume costituiscono la base per confermare, ampliare e riflettere su alcuni degli assunti che caratterizzano l’attuale panorama della sociolinguistica storica.

Personal pronouns have a special status in languages. As indexical tools they are the means by which languages and persons intimately interface with each other within a particular social structure. Pronouns involve more than mere grammatical functions in live communication acts. They variously signal the gender of speakers as parts of utterances or in their anaphoric roles. They also prominently indicate with a range of degrees the kind of social relationships that hold between speakers from intimacy to indifference, from dominance to submission, and from solidarity to hostility. Languages greatly vary in the number of pronouns and other address terms they offer to their users with a distinct range of social values. Children learn their relative position in their family and in their society through the “correct” use of pronouns. When languages come into contact because of population migrations or through the process of translation, pronouns are the most sensitive zone of tension both psychologically and politically. This volume endeavours to probe the comparative pragmatics of pronominal systems as social processes in a representative set from different language families and cultural areas.
