Taiwan0́9s strategic geopolitical position0́4along with domestic political developments0́4have put the country in turmoil ever since the post-Chinese civil war. In particular, its antagonistic, cross-strait relationship with China has led to various negative consequences and cast a spotlight on the country on the international diplomatic front for close to over six decades. After the end of the Cold War, the democratization of Taiwan altered her political identity and released a nation-building process that was seemingly irreversible. Taiwan0́9s nation-building efforts have moved the nation further away from reunification with China. With that, the people0́9s sentiments (especially those of the younger generation) of China have deteriorated and see it as a prime economic and democratic political threat, giving rise to the Sunflower student movement. Due to this increased resentment towards and tension with China, Taiwan has compromised its pre-existing vulnerable geopolitical position and the help it receives from the outside world. While that may be the case, this study suggests that the strong Taiwanese identity amongst young Taiwanese is due to contextual influences and that their attitudes toward China is fluid and can be shaped by their environment.

Ethnic minorities historically comprised a solid majority of Bangkok's population. They played a dominant role in the city's exuberant economic and social development. In the shadow of Siam's prideful, flamboyant Thai ruling class, the city's diverse minorities flourished quietly. The Thai-Portuguese; the Mon; the Lao; the Cham, Persian, Indian, Malay, and Indonesian Muslims; and the Taechiu, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainanese, and Cantonese Chinese speech groups were particularly important. Others, such as the Khmer, Vietnamese, Thai Yuan, Sikhs, and Westerners, were smaller in numbers but no less significant in their influence on the city's growth and prosperity. In tracing the social, political, and spatial dynamics of Bangkok's ethnic pluralism through the two-and-a-half centuries of the city's history, this book calls attention to a long-neglected mainspring of Thai urban development. Is modernity in non-Western societies always an �alternative� modernity, a derivative copy of an �original modernity� that began in the West? By focusing on people�s ordinary routines of working, eating, going to school, and traveling, the authors examine the notion of modernity as it has been staged in the minute details of Chinese life. Essays explore people�s basic search for food, water, and lighting during the late-Qing -- early republican era; contradictory attitudes toward women and the violence of foot-binding; the role of Chinese scientists in promoting a shift to modern, nationalistic discourses; the growing popularity of savings banks among urban Chinese in the early twentieth century; the transnational and national identities of returned overseas Chinese in Xiamen, Fujian Province; and middle-class �Shanghai travelers� who imagined themselves as cosmopolitan consumers.
