This book provides a review of the bioregionalist theory in the field of spatial planning and design as a suitable approach to cope with the growing concerns about the negative effects of metropolization processes and the need for a sustainable transition. The book starts out with a section on rethinking places for community life, and discusses the reframing of regional governance and development as well as social justice in spatial planning. It introduces the concept of the urban bioregion, a pivotal concept that underpins balanced polycentric spatial patterns and supports self-reliant and fair local development. Massimo Quaini (1941-2017) è stato uno dei protagonisti della geografia. Un gruppo di studiosi gli dedica questo libro per continuare a dipanare, nel labirinto del mondo, il filo delle sue riflessioni, che hanno collocato la geografia tra le scienze del territorio per farne oggetto di impegno civile. Il suo pensiero critico, transdisciplinare, non ha mai riconosciuto confini ma solo feconde differenze di prospettiva: la sua più alta eredità sta forse in questo impulso a integrare competenze diverse (di storici, poeti, archeologi, ecologi, pianificatori…) per rimettere in valore i luoghi del mondo. Questo non è quindi il classico libro ‘in memoria’ sui temi di Quaini ma, oseremmo dire, un libro con Quaini.

The central theme of this book is ecological and territorialist conversion as a strategic response to the crisis. 'The return to the territory' can be conceived as a valorisation of the common heritage of assets (environmental, urban fabric, landscape, socio-cultural) that mould the identity and lifestyles of every place on the earth. This calls for several issues to be addressed: the fusing of fragmented knowledge into a science of the territory that addresses the problems of socio-territorial and environmental decay in an integrated manner; the definition of new markers and policies of public welfare and happiness, including the landscape as a measure of the quality of peoples' life-worlds; the boosting of tools of local democracy and supportive federalism; the restoration of centrality to the rural world in the production of healthy food, hydro-geological protection measures, ecological reclamation, urban and landscape quality and integrated economies.

Ce livre naît par une intention de projet et par la volonté de dialoguer avec la rive sud de la Méditerranéenne autour de grands défis actuels, en matière d’urbanisme et aménagement. A cette fin les auteurs identifient six projets, matrices de la tradition disciplinaire italienne, d’où extraire orientations conceptuelles. Quelques stratégies se dégagent : le rôle structurant de l’espace ouvert non artificialisé ; la fonction ordonnatrice de l’espace public ; la centralité de l’action publique dans le gouvernement des transformations ; l’importance d’une approche multidisciplinaire et intégré ; un concept de patrimoine comme gisement vivant d’idées pour le projet. Finalement, en filigrane, l’évocation d’une limite entre choses anthropiques et naturelles qui donne mesure et dimension à notre monde. Questo libro nasce da un’intenzione progettuale e dalla volontà di dialogare con la sponda sud del Mediterraneo su alcune grandi sfide attuali in campo urbanistico e territoriale. A tal fine gli autori individuano sei progetti, matrici fondative della tradizione disciplinare italiana, da cui estrarre orientamenti progettuali. Emergono alcune strategie: il ruolo strutturante dello spazio aperto non artificializzato; la funzione ordinatrice dello spazio collettivo; la centralità dell’azione pubblica nel governo delle trasformazioni; l’importanza di un approccio multidisciplinare e integrato; un concetto di patrimonio inteso come deposito vivente di idee per il progetto. Infine, l’evocazione, in filigrana, di un limite tra cose antropiche e naturali che dia misura e dimensione al nostro mondo.
