Continuum Physics, Volume II: Continuum Mechanics of Single-Substance Bodies discusses the continuum mechanics of bodies constituted by a single substance, providing a thorough and precise presentation of exact theories that have evolved during the past years. This book consists of three parts—basic principles, constitutive equations for simple materials, and methods of solution. Part I of this publication is devoted to a discussion of basic principles irrespective of material geometry and constitution that are valid for all kinds of substances, including composites. The geometrical notions, kinematics, balance laws, and thermodynamics of continua are also deliberated. Part II focuses on materials consisting of a single substance, followed by a general theory of constitutive equations and special types of bodies. The thermoelastic solids, thermoviscous fluids, and memory-dependent materials are likewise considered. Part III is devoted to a discussion of a variety of nonlinear and linear problems, as well as nonlinear deformations of elastic solids, viscometric fluids, singular surfaces and waves, and complex function technique. This volume is a good source for researchers and students conducting work on the continuum mechanics of single-substance bodies.

Continuum Physics, Volume IV: Polar and Nonlocal Field Theories discusses the exposition of field theories for bodies which possess inner structure that can interact with mechanical and electromagnetic fields. This book provides precise presentations of exact continuum theories on materially non-uniform or non-simple bodies that can respond to short- and long-range inter-particle loads and fields. This volume consists of three parts. Part I is devoted to the study of continuum field theories for bodies having inner structure. All materials, to some extent, are composed of particles that behave like small rigid bodies or deformable particles, unlike the geometrical points of the classical continuum theory. The developments of nonlocal theories of nonpolar and polar continua are covered in Parts II and III. This publication is valuable to students and researchers interested in polar and nonlocal field theories.

Nonlocal Continuum Field Theories written by A. Cemal Eringen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-06-14 with Science categories.

Nonlocal continuum field theories are concerned with material bodies whose behavior at any interior point depends on the state of all other points in the body -- rather than only on an effective field resulting from these points -- in addition to its own state and the state of some calculable external field. Nonlocal field theory extends classical field theory by describing the responses of points within the medium by functionals rather than functions (the "constitutive relations" of classical field theory). Such considerations are already well known in solid-state physics, where the nonlocal interactions between the atoms are prevalent in determining the properties of the material. The tools developed for crystalline materials, however, do not lend themselves to analyzing amorphous materials, or materials in which imperfections are a major part of the structure. Nonlocal continuum theories, by contrast, can describe these materials faithfully at scales down to the lattice parameter. This book presents a unified approach to field theories for elastic solids, viscous fluids, and heat-conducting electromagnetic solids and fluids that include nonlocal effects in both space and time (memory effects). The solutions to the field equations agree remarkably well with atomic theories and experimental observations.

Continuum mechanics is a branch of mechanics that deals with the analysis of the kinematics and mechanical behaviour of materials modelled as a continuum (eg: solids and fluids, liquids and gases). A continuum concept assumes that the substance of the body is distributed throughout -- and completely fills -- the space it occupies. Differential equations can be employed in solving problems in continuum mechanics. Some of these differential equations are specific to the materials being investigated and are called constitutive equations, while others capture fundamental physical laws, such as the conservation of mass (the continuity equation), the conservation of momentum (the equations of motion and equilibrium), and the conservation of energy (the first law of thermodynamics). This book gathers the latest research from around the globe in this field.

The Thermodynamics Of Linear Fluids And Fluid Mixtures written by Miloslav Pekař and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-19 with Science categories.

In this book, Samohýl and Pekař offer a consistent and general non-equilibrium thermodynamic description for a model of chemically reacting mixtures. This type of model is frequently encountered in practice and up until now, chemically reacting systems (out of equilibrium) have rarely been described in books on non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Readers of this book benefit from the systematic development of the theory; this starts with general principles, going through the applications to single component fluid systems, and finishing with the theory of mixtures, including chemical reactions. The authors describe the simplest mixture model – the linear fluid – and highlight many practical and thermodynamically consistent equations for describing transport properties and reaction kinetics for this model. Further on in the book, the authors also describe more complex models. Samohýl and Pekař take special care to clearly explain all methodology and starting axioms and they also describe in detail applied assumptions and simplifications. This book is suitable for graduate students in chemistry, materials science and chemical engineering as well as professionals working in these and related areas.

Many textbooks on continuum mechanics plunge students in at the ‘deep end’ of three-dimensional analysis and applications. However a striking number of commonplace models of our physical environment are based entirely within the dynamics of a one-dimensional continuum. This introductory text therefore approaches the subject entirely within such a one-dimensional framework. The principles of the mathematical modeling of one-dimensional media constitute the book's backbone. These concepts are elucidated with a diverse selection of applications, ranging from tidal dynamics and dispersion in channels to beam bending, algal blooms, blood flow, and the greenhouse effect. The book is ideally suited to elementary undergraduate courses as it makes no use of multivariable calculus. A number of graded problems are included at the end of each section.
