In one story, a woman sleeps with the village priest, trying to gain back the land the church took from her family; in another, relatives in the Azores fight over a plot of land owned by their expatriate American cousin. Even apparently small images are cast in terms of the earth: Milton, one narrator explains, has made apples the object of a misunderstanding by naming them as Eden's fruit: "In the Bible, no fruit is named in the Garden of Eden - and to this day apples are misunderstood. They were trying to tempt people not into sin but into listening to the earth more closely. . . . their white meal runs wet with the knowledge of the language of the land, but people do not listen."Vaz's beautiful, intensely conscious language often delicately slips her stories into the realm of the fado, the Portuguese song about fate and longing. "Listen for the nightingale that presses its breast against the thorns of the rose," on character sings, "that the song might be more beautiful." Such a verse might describe Vaz's own motive behind her willingness to confront her subject's ambiguities and her characters' conflicts - the simultaneous joy and sorrow of some of life's discoveries, the pain sometimes hidden within passion and pleasure.

Illuminates unexplored dimensions of the music-literature relationship and the sometimes unrecognized talents of certain famous writers and composers. This book deals with three aspects that have been neglected in the burgeoning field of music and literature. The "First Movement" of the book considers writers from German Romanticism to the present who, like Robert Schumann, first saw themselves as writers before they turned to composition, or, like E. T. A. Hoffmann and Anthony Burgess, sought careers in music before becoming writers. It also considers the few operatic composers, such as Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg, who wrote their own libretti. The "Second Movement" turns to literary works based specifically on musical compositions. This group includes, first and more generally, prose works whose author chose a specificmusical form such as sonata or fugue as an organizational model. And second, it includes novels based structurally or thematically on specific compositions, such as Bach's Goldberg Variations. The "Finale" concludes with aunique case: efforts by modern composers to render musically the compositions described in detail by Thomas Mann in his novel Doktor Faustus. This dissertation begins with the premise that the founding assumptions undergirding the interdisciplinary field of Tourism Studies have necessarily, if not inevitably, engendered a set of critical lacunae around race and ethnicity. Specifically, these assumptions have functioned to circumscribe any racial paradigm in which people of color are anything but the objects of touristic inquiry. "When the 'other' is ourselves: imperial legacies, tourist imaginaries, and the representation of difference in Chicana/o travel writing and cultural production" asks what subjectivities are (re)formed when the supposed "Other" is doing the touring, particularly when that someone encounters what she senses is an exoticized or fetishized reflection of herself. Through an examination of Chicana/o memoirs, visual art, and fiction that center Mexican-American (actual and imagined, factual and fictionalized) experiences of touristic mobility, this study considers new and different questions about identity, difference, and representation in literary and cultural discourses.
