This book is a compilation of recent developments in land, ecosystem, and water management in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The state is located in the biodiversity hotspot of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), a biome characterized by high biological diversity and endemism. At the same time the state of Rio de Janeiro emerged to one of the economic hubs in Latin America. This development process has been accompanied by population growth, industrialization, urbanization, as well as consumption and degradation of land and water resources. In the past years many efforts have been made to stop or at least slow down these degradation processes and restore degraded environments with the overall goal to bring together sustainable management of natural resources, nature conservation, and economic development. An overview is provided of the different strategies and tools that have been developed in the fields of agriculture, ecosystem management and biodiversity, integrated water management, land restoration, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, as well as environmental governance and economic instruments. This book covers a wide spectrum from applied research to science‐policy interfaces, planning concepts, and technical tools and has a model character for other rural areas in Latin America. Target groups are scientists, practitioners, policy makers and graduate students in the field of environmental management. The different chapters are written by researchers and practitioners of the German‐Brazilian project INTECRAL (Integrated Eco Technologies and Services for a Sustainable Rural Rio de Janeiro), the rural development program Rio Rural under the state secretary for agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as invited scientists from Brazilian universities and research institutes. It bridges existing gaps between science, policies, and practice in rural development.

A obra realiza uma abordagem crítica acerca das cláusulas abusivas dos contratos de crédito bancário celebrados entre as MPEs e as instituições financeiras. A problemática pode levar as empresas ao superendividamento, impactando o desenvolvimento econômico do país, na medida em que o abuso do poder econômico dos bancos se sobrepõe aos interesses sociais e aos princípios constitucionais, como a função social das empresas. Os contratos bancários são compostos por cláusulas que camuflam a cumulação ilegal de encargos, com a cobrança de juros abusivos sob a égide da assimetria informacional, de modo que afrontam o sistema de proteção ao consumidor e as normas constitucionais que conferem tratamento diferenciado às MPEs. No primeiro plano, é realizada exposição de características e princípios gerais relativos às MPEs, como as disposições da Lei Complementar no 123/2006. Além disso, são abordadas as cláusulas abusivas, por meio de um paralelo com as disposições normativas que permeiam o tema. Ademais, é realizada análise empírica de um contrato bancário na prática e o exame jurisprudencial acerca das decisões nas ações revisionais que buscam o reequilíbrio contratual em decorrência da onerosidade excessiva desses contratos. Por fim, são analisadas hipóteses de intervenção do Estado com a regulação do sistema bancário, relacionando o Direito do Consumidor, o Direito Econômico e o Direito Concorrencial, bem como a Constituição Federal, com vistas à preservação da empresa.

Annotation This book provides an independent and comprehensive review of World Bank irrigation lending and policy between 1948 and 1993. The Bank's role in irrigation lending has been large--more than $30 billion (in current U.S. dollars) spread over some 600 projects. Only 200 projects have been in place long enough to be assessed. The overall performance record is good, but there is room for improvement.The report finds that there are still pervasive problems in maintenance and operation. Operating chaos prevails in most large canal systems in the humid tropics. In drier areas, drainage is the biggest environmental problem associated with irrigation. The author argues for upgrading existing systems, improving service, involving irrigators, and saving water where it is scarce.
