On 1 August 1935, only a few months before Mussolini launched the colonial enterprise in Ethiopia, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar was produced at the Maxentius Basilica in Rome. The performance was organised by The National Workers’ Recreational Club (O.N.D.) and the script was submitted for censorship. However, the procedure followed a different course from the usual one as the commissioner was also part of the Fascist political system. This parallel edition presents for the first time the integral script of the censored text of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in Raffaello Piccoli's 1925 Italian translation, and explores the implications of this peculiar type of censorship at the moment when, through Shakespeare, censoring became one and the same with political propaganda.

L'ascesa al potere in Europa dopo la Grande Guerra dei regimi totalitari, portatori di concezioni dell'uomo e della vita contrarie alla dottrina e all'etica cristiane, obbligò le Chiese e i credenti ad affrontare il problema della compatibilità tra totalitarismo e cristianesimo. Se il bolscevismo, per l'esplicita professione di ateismo e la persecuzione religiosa attuata dal comunismo sovietico, suscitò la quasi unanime condanna da parte cristiana, più complesso e ambivalente fu il confronto con fascismo e nazionalsocialismo. Ci furono credenti che seppero comprendere subito la gravità della minaccia dei totalitarismi per il cristianesimo e la civiltà umana, e li combatterono con decisione e convinzione. Figure di antifascisti come don Luigi Sturzo, Francesco Luigi Ferrari o don Primo Mazzolari. Tuttavia la Chiesa cattolica in Italia e le Chiese protestanti in Germania cercarono di stabilire un dialogo e un rapporto con gli Stati totalitari. Lo stesso atteggiamento ambiguo di questi ultimi, oscillante tra omaggio e disprezzo, sostegno e antagonismo nei confronti della religione, ingannò e illuse molti credenti. In particolare ricco di problemi, di tensioni sotterranee e scontri aperti si mostrò il ventennale confronto tra fascismo e cattolicesimo. In Italia, il primo paese occidentale con un regime a partito unico che sacralizzava la politica e celebrava il culto del capo, Mussolini si era presentato con il Concordato come difensore della Chiesa, la quale considerava il fascismo, come poi il nazionalsocialismo, un "baluardo" contro il bolscevismo, la modernità liberale e la democrazia laica, ma trovava insieme nella religione politica fascista un potenziale concorrente. In Germania, invece, le componenti neopagane che proponevano il nazionalsocialismo come nuova religione anticristiana con un culto teutonico, ariano e antisemita, indussero vescovi cattolici ed esponenti delle confessioni religiose protestanti alla presa di distanza dal regime di Hitler. Per le coscienze cristiane, il conflitto tra primato di Cristo e primato di Cesare fu un'esperienza drammatica, e per alcuni si rivelò anche un'occasione di riflessione sul significato del totalitarismo e sul pericolo degli integralismi di Stato e di Chiesa.

In the last years, the discussion around what is fascism, if this concept can be applied to present forms of politics and if its seeds are still present today, became central in the political debate. This discussion led to a vast reconsideration of the meaning and the experience of fascism in Europe and is changing the ways in which scholars of different generations look at this political ideology and come back to it and it is also changing the ways in which we consider the experience of Italian fascism in the European and global context. The aim of the book is building a general history of Fascism and its historiography through the analysis of 13 different fundamental aspects, which were at the core of Fascist project or of Fascist practices during the regime. Each essay considers a specific and meaningful aspect of the history of Italian fascism, reflecting on it from the vantage point of a case study. The essays thus reinterrogates the history of Fascism to understand in which way Fascism was able to mould the historical context in which it was born, how and if it transformed political, cultural, social elements that were already present in Italy. The themes considered are violence, empire, war, politics, economy, religion, culture, but also antifascism and the impact of Fascism abroad, especially in the Twenties and at the beginnings of the Thirties. The book could be both used for a general public interested in the history of Europe in the interwar period and for an academic and scholarly public, since the essays aim to develop a provocative reflection on their own area of research.
