This book aims at providing a view of the current trends in the development of research on Synthesis and Control of Discrete Event Systems. Papers col lected in this volume are based on a selection of talks given in June and July 2001 at two independent meetings: the Workshop on Synthesis of Concurrent Systems, held in Newcastle upon Tyne as a satellite event of ICATPN/ICACSD and organized by Ph. Darondeau and L. Lavagno, and the Symposium on the Supervisory Control of Discrete Event Systems (SCODES), held in Paris as a satellite event of CAV and organized by B. Caillaud and X. Xie. Synthesis is a generic term that covers all procedures aiming to construct from specifications given as input objects matching these specifications. The ories and applications of synthesis have been studied and developped for long in connection with logics, programming, automata, discrete event systems, and hardware circuits. Logics and programming are outside the scope of this book, whose focus is on Discrete Event Systems and Supervisory Control. The stress today in this field is on a better applicability of theories and algorithms to prac tical systems design. Coping with decentralization or distribution and caring for an efficient realization of the synthesized systems or controllers are of the utmost importance in areas so diverse as the supervision of embedded or man ufacturing systems, or the implementation of protocols in software or in hard ware.

The Workshop on Control Mechanics has been held at the University of South ern California annually since 1988 under the leadership of late Professor Janislaw M. Skowronski. The primary goal of Professor Skowronski in organizing this series of work shops was to promote the use of advanced mechanics method in control theory with a special emphasis on the control of nonlinear mechanical systems subject to uncertainty. This goal has been achieved through a consistent participation of a large number of researchers in the field of control and mechanics and an intensive exchange of their ideas. Professor Skowronski passed away unexpectedly on March 21, 1992, after the conclusion of the Fifth Workshop. The great success of the Fifth Workshop as well as the entire Control Mechanics Workshops over the years is almost exclusively due to his dedication, enthusiasm, and organizational capabilities. His untimely demise is a great loss to us and to the mechanics and control community. The proceedings of the Fifth Workshop presented in this volume are dedicated to Professor Angelo Miele, one of the pioneers and ,a leading contributor in many fields of control theory and its applications. His contribution spans a wide range of topics such as optimization theory, flight mechanics, astrodynamics, ocean engineering, and numerical methods. Microprocessor System Design: A Practical Introduction describes the concepts and techniques incorporated into the design of electronic circuits, particularly microprocessor boards and their peripherals. The PAL is programmable and configurable to match the requirement of a given circuit. Using PAL can save space, a very important factor in the miniaturization process. Examples of PAL applications include the BCD counter, the LS 138 emulator, and a priority interrupt encoder. With respect to the first edition as Volume 218 in the Lecture Notes in Con trol and Information Sciences series the basic idea of the second edition has remained the same: to provide a compact presentation of some basic ideas in the classical theory of input-output and closed-loop stability, together with a choice of contributions to the recent theory of nonlinear robust and 1foo control and passivity-based control. Nevertheless, some parts of the book have been thoroughly revised and/or expanded, in order to have a more balanced presen tation of the theory and to include some of the new developments which have been taken place since the appearance of the first edition. I soon realized, how ever, that it is not possible to give a broad exposition of the existing literature in this area without affecting the spirit of the book, which is precisely aimed at a compact presentation. So as a result the second edition still reflects very much my personal taste and research interests. I trust that others will write books emphasizing different aspects. Major changes with respect to the first edition are the following: • A new section has been added in Chapter 2 relating L2-gain and passivity via scattering, emphasizing a coordinate-free, geometric, treatment. • The section on stability in Chapter 3 has been thoroughly expanded, also incorporating some recent results presented in [182J.
