The word "control" has many implications for video games. On a basic level, without player control, there is no experience. Much of the video game industry focuses on questions of control and ways to improve play to make the gamer feel more connected to the virtual world. The sixteen essays in this collection offer critical examinations of the issue of control in video games, including different ways to theorize and define control within video gaming and how control impacts game design and game play. Close readings of specific games--including Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Dragon Age: Origins--consider how each locates elements of control in their structures. As video games increasingly become a major force in the media landscape, this important contribution to the field of game studies provides a valuable framework for understanding their growing impact.

On the other hand, he's sexy as hell, and his boyfriend, Christopher, is as kind as he is a gorgeous, drool-worthy geek of a guy. When the tension of trying to keep her business together threatens to tear Julie apart, Christopher's got a solution for teaching her to share the workload. If she can surrender control in the bedroom, it might help her delegate in the office. What starts as game where blindfolds and submission are the board pieces becomes more serious. Until Julie discovers that Dante and Christopher have kept a secret from her that shatters her trust, leaving their hearts and jobs one move away from game over.

Examinations of wargaming for entertainment, education, and military planning, in terms of design, critical analysis, and historical contexts. Games with military themes date back to antiquity, and yet they are curiously neglected in much of the academic and trade literature on games and game history. This volume fills that gap, providing a diverse set of perspectives on wargaming's past, present, and future. In Zones of Control, contributors consider wargames played for entertainment, education, and military planning, in terms of design, critical analysis, and historical contexts. They consider both digital and especially tabletop games, most of which cover specific historical conflicts or are grounded in recognizable real-world geopolitics. Game designers and players will find the historical and critical contexts often missing from design and hobby literature; military analysts will find connections to game design and the humanities; and academics will find documentation and critique of a sophisticated body of cultural work in which the complexity of military conflict is represented in ludic systems and procedures. Each section begins with a long anchoring chapter by an established authority, which is followed by a variety of shorter pieces both analytic and anecdotal. Topics include the history of playing at war; operations research and systems design; wargaming and military history; wargaming's ethics and politics; gaming irregular and non-kinetic warfare; and wargames as artistic practice. The designer of Unreal and Gears of War offers an eye-opening personal account of the video game industry as it grew from niche hobby to hundred-billion-dollar enterprise. Video games are dominating the planet. In 2020, they brought in $180 billion dollars globally—nearly $34 billion in the United States alone. So who are the brilliant designers who create these stunning virtual worlds? Cliff Bleszinski—or CliffyB as he is known to gamers—is one of the few who’ve reached mythical, rock star status. In Control Freak, he gives an unvarnished, all-access tour of the business. Toiling away in his bedroom, Bleszinski created and shipped his first game before graduating high school, and at just seventeen joined a fledgling company called Epic Games. He describes the grueling hours, obscene amounts of Mountain Dew and obsessive focus necessary to achieve his singular creative visions. He details Epic’s rise to industry leader, thanks largely to his work on bestselling franchises Unreal and Gears of War (and, later, his input on a little game called Fortnite), as well as his own awkward ascent from shy, acne-riddled introvert to sports car-driving celebrity rubbing shoulders with Bill Gates. As he writes, “No one is weirder than a nerd with money.” While the book is laced with such self-deprecating humor, Bleszinski also bluntly addresses the challenges that have long-faced the gaming community, including sexism and a lack of representation among both designers and the characters they create. Control Freak is a hilarious, thoughtful, and inspiring memoir. Even if you don’t play games, you’ll walk away from this book recognizing them as a true art form and appreciating the genius of their creators.

Control-theoretic Methods for Cyber-Physical Security presents novel results on security and defense methodologies applied to cyber-physical systems. This book adopts the viewpoint of control and game theories, modelling these autonomous platforms as dynamical systems and proposing algorithmic frameworks that both proactively and reactively shield the system against catastrophic failures. The algorithms presented employ model-based and data-driven techniques to security, ranging from model-free detection mechanisms to unpredictability-based defense approaches. This book will be a reference to the research community in identifying approaches to security that go beyond robustification techniques and give attention to the tight interplay between the physical and digital devices of the system, providing algorithms that can be readily used in a variety of application domains where the systems are subject to different kinds of attacks. Serves as a bibliography on different aspects of security in cyber-physical systems Offers insights into security through innovative approaches, which amalgamate principles from diverse disciplines Explores unresolved challenges in the security domain, examining them through the lens of rigorous formulations from control and game theory

This book deals with economic policy regarding the Greenhouse Effect using control and game models. First, a literature review is given of intertemporal optimisation models of environmental issues with special focus on the Greenhouse Effect. Next, the issue of sustainability is discussed for different specifications of the natural assimilation function. Furthermore, capital accumulation is considered both in abatement and in human capital. The international dimension is analysed next with focus on the difference between feedback and open-loop solutions, as well as on cooperative outcomes using trigger and renegotiation-proof strategies. Finally, second best forms of cooperation in the form of "issue linkage" and "technology transfers" are worked out.

Mean field games and Mean field type control introduce new problems in Control Theory. The terminology “games” may be confusing. In fact they are control problems, in the sense that one is interested in a single decision maker, whom we can call the representative agent. However, these problems are not standard, since both the evolution of the state and the objective functional is influenced but terms which are not directly related to the state or the control of the decision maker. They are however, indirectly related to him, in the sense that they model a very large community of agents similar to the representative agent. All the agents behave similarly and impact the representative agent. However, because of the large number an aggregation effect takes place. The interesting consequence is that the impact of the community can be modeled by a mean field term, but when this is done, the problem is reduced to a control problem.

This book is devoted to an investigation of control problems which can be described by ordinary differential equations and be expressed in terms of game theoretical notions. In these terms, a strategy is a control based on the feedback principle which will assure a definite equality for the controlled process which is subject to uncertain factors such as a move or a controlling action of the opponent. Game Theoretical Control Problems contains definitions and formalizations of differential games, existence for equilibrium and extensive discussions of optimal strategies. Formal definitions and statements are accompanied by suitable motivations and discussions of computational algorithms. The book is addessed to mathematicians, engineers, economists and other users of control theoretical and game theoretical notions.
