The methods of mathematical control theory are widely used in the modern physics, but still they are less popular in quantum science. We will discuss the aspects of control theory, which are the most useful in applications to the real problems of quantum optics. We apply this technique to control the behavior of the two-level quantum particles in the modulated external optical field in the frame of the so-called "semi classical model", where quantum two-level atomic system interacts with classical electromagnetic field. In chapter 1 we give some basic definitions, terminologies and preliminary results related to applied control theory. In chapter 2 we propose a simple model of feedforward control for the quantum particle system, which is a basement for further investigation of two-level quantum particle in the external one-dimensional optical field. In chapter 3 we demonstrate the possibility to stabilize the probability amplitudes of the upper level for a single quantum two-level atom in a classical optical field with feedback control scheme. In chapter 4 an effective quantum particle beam-splitter is realized in the frame of open- loop control scheme.

In the present chapter, the possibility of spin states control in quantum dots as bases of creation of logic elements on the basis of quantum semi-conductor systems is discussed. In particular, the multi-particle approach to the description of spin system and control of coherent spin conditions is developed. It is shown that at action by an impulse of a magnetic field two types of spin conditions are possible, depending on initial data: conditionally steady and absolutely steady. The second type of conditions is important for information storage.

The dynamics of quantum systems exposed to ultrafast (at the femtosecond time-scale) and strong laser radiation has a highly non-linear character, leading to a number of new phenomena, outside the reach of traditional spectroscopy. The current laser technology makes feasible the probing and control of quantum-scale systems with fields that are as strong as the interatomic Coulombic interactions and time resolution that is equal to (or less than) typical atomic evolution times. It is indispensable that any theoretical description of the induced physical processes should rely on the accurate calculation of the atomic structure and a realistic model of the laser radiation as pulsed fields. This book aims to provide an elementary introduction of theoretical and computational methods and by no means is anywhere near to complete. The selection of the topics as well as the particular viewpoint is best suited for early-stage students and researchers; the included material belongs in the mainstream of theoretical approaches albeit using simpler language without sacrificing mathematical accuracy. Therefore, subjects such as the Hilbert vector-state, density-matrix operators, amplitude equations, Liouville equation, coherent laser radiation, free-electron laser, Dyson-chronological operator, subspace projection, perturbation theory, stochastic density-matrix equations, time-dependent Schrödinger equation, partial-wave analysis, spherical-harmonics expansions, basis and grid wavefunction expansions, ionization, electron kinetic-energy and angular distributions are presented within the context of laser-atom quantum dynamics.

Levitodynamics is a fast growing field that studies the levitation and manipulation of micro- and nanoobjects, fuelled by both fundamental physics questions and technological applications. Due to the isolated nature of trapped particles, levitated systems are highly decoupled from the environment, and offer experimental possibilities that are absent in clamped nanomechanical oscillators. In particular, a central question in quantum physics is how the transition between the classical and quantum world materializes, and levitated objects represent a promising avenue to study this intermediate regime. In the last years, most levitation experiments have been restricted to optically trapped silica nanoparticles in vacuum, controlling the particle's position with intensity modulated laser beams. However, the use of optical traps severely constrains the experiments that can be performed, because few particle materials can withstand the optical absorption and resulting heating in vacuum. This completely prevents the use of objects with internal degrees of freedom, which--coupled to mechanical variables--offer a clear path towards the study of quantum phenomena at the macroscale. In this thesis, we address these issues by considering other types of trap and feedback schemes, achieving excellent control on the dynamics of optically active nanoparticles. With stochastic calculus, simulations and experiments, we study the dynamics of trapped particles in different regimes, considering also a hybrid quadrupole-optical trapping scheme. Then, using a Paul trap of our own design, we demonstrate the trapping, interrogation and feedback cooling of a nanodiamond hosting a single NV center in vacuum, a clear candidate to perform quantum physics experiments at the single spin level. Finally, we discuss and implement an optimal controller to cool the center of mass motion of an optically levitated nanoparticle. The feedback is realized by exerting a Coulomb force on a charged particle with a pair of electrodes, and thus requires no optics.

This dissertation aims to investigate systems in which several optical and mechanical degrees of freedom are coupled through optomechanical interactions. Multimode optomechanics creates the prospect of integrated functional devices and it allows us to explore new types of optomechanical interactions which account for collective dynamics and optically mediated mechanical interactions. Owing to the development of fabrication techniques for micro- and nano-sized mechanical elements, macroscopic mechanical oscillators can be cooled to the deep quantum regime via optomechanical interaction. Based on the possibility to control the motion of mechanical oscillators at the quantum level, we design several schemes involving mechanical systems of macroscopic length and mass scales and we explore the nonlinear dynamics of mechanical oscillators. The first scheme includes a quantum cantilever coupled to a classical tuning fork via magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and also coupled to a single optical field mode via optomechanical interaction. We investigate the generation of nonclassical squeezed states in the quantum cantilever and their detection by transferring them to the optical field. The second scheme involves a quantum membrane coupled to two optical modes via optomechanical interaction. We explore dynamic stabilization of an unstable position of a quantum mechanical oscillator via modulation of the optical fields. We then develop a general formalism to fully describe cavity mediated mechanical interactions. We explore a rather general configuration in which multiple mechanical oscillators interact with a single cavity field mode. We specifically consider the situation in which the cavity dissipation is the dominant source of damping so that the cavity field follows the dynamics of the mechanical modes. In particular, we study two limiting regimes with specific applications: the weak-coupling regime and single-photon strong-coupling regime. In the weak-coupling regime, we build a protocol for quantum state transfer between mechanical modes. In the single-photon coupling regime, we investigate the nonlinear nature of the mechanical system which generates bistability and bifurcation in the classical analysis and we also explore how these features manifest themselves in interference, entanglement, and correlation in the quantum theory.
