The effects of using reactive carbonate rocks as concrete aggregates were evaluated in a laboratory investigation. Three reactive carbonate rocks, each producing a different manifestation of the alkali-carbonate rock reaction in concrete, were each used at three dilution levels, one with low-alkali and two with high-alkali portland cements, to make concrete specimens that were tested for length changes for 3 yr in a moist environment, and for compressive and tensile strengths to 1 yr. Limited testing for compressive strength was extended to 3 yr. A carbonate rock and a granite gneiss were also used as coarse aggregates in other concrete mixtures to serve as controls. The detection procedure and control criteria of Appendix C of the Standard Practice for Concrete for potentially reactive carbonate rocks intended for use as concrete aggregates were considered for validity in view of the laboratory results. The test data indicate that the numerical values used in Appendix C are satisfactory without change. It is recommended that Appendix C be modified to permit optional testing of potentially reactive rocks in concrete when this seems desirable.

Aggregates containing certain constituents can react with alkali hydroxides in concrete. The reactivity is potentially harmful only when it produces significant expansion. This alkali-aggregate reactivity (AAR) has two forms--alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and alkali-carbonate reaction (ACR, sometimes called alkali-carbonate rock reaction, or ACRR). ASR is of more concern than ACR because the occurrence of aggregates containing reactive silica minerals is more common. Alkali-reactive carbonate aggregates have a specific composition that is not very common. Alkali-silica reactivity has been recognized as a potential source of distress in concrete since the later 1930s. Even though potentially reactive aggregates exist throughout North America, ASR distress in structural concrete is not common. There are a number of reasons for this: 1. Most aggregates are chemically stable in hydraulic-cement concrete 2. Aggregates with good service records are abundant in many areas 3. The concrete in service is dry enough to inhibit ASR 4. The use of certain pozzolans or slags controls ASR 5. In many concrete mixtures, the alkali content of the concrete is low enough to control harmful ASR 6. Some forms of ASR do not produce significant deleterious expansion To reduce ASR potential requires understanding the ASR mechanism; properly using tests to identify potentially reactive aggregates; and, if needed, taking steps to minimize the potential for expansion and related cracking. Alkali-carbonate reaction in concrete was not documented until 1957. Although ACR is much less common, this report also briefly reviews the mechanism, visual distress symptoms, identification tests, and control measures.

Based on the review of previous Council reports, a strategy for the use and control of potentially reactive carbonate rocks is discussed in this report, which lists the previous reports in a bibliography. Specifically, this report discusses an evaluation of four test methods using a suite of 22 rocks exhibiting a wide range of potential expansion and mineralogical compositions. The purposes of the evaluation were (1) to evaluate the ability of the methods to predict detrimental expansions of concrete caused by alkali-carbonate reactions, and (2) to evaluate the capability of the methods for characterizing the reactive potential of commercial aggregate sources. The aggregates were evaluated in concretes made with three cements having different alkali contents. Testing methods included measurements of the expansion of concrete moist cured for 5 years, resistance of concrete to freezing and thawing, expansion of mortar bars, and length changes of rock prisms stored in an NaOH solution. The following conclusions were drawn. (1) Expansions of the apparently nonreactive aggregates were generally higher than values reported in the literature, and (2) ASTM Method C 586, while proving to be essentially a screening method, when used in conjunction with other procedures, such as petrographic examination, can be used for providing a rapid quantitative evaluation of the potential for expansion of the aggregate in concrete.
