Convergent Flux illustrates the contemporary architectural and urban planning developments in South Korea in the context of the country's considerable urban density. In recent years South Korea, which long stood in the shadow of the superpowers Japan and China, has surged in economic terms. That said, industrialization and the population explosion connected with it have created enormous challenges for the country at the interface between globalization and cultural identity. Some 10.5 million inhabitants live in the center of the capital Seoul, while the metropolitan area includes around 25 million residents making it the second largest conurbation in the world after Tokyo. The result is high urban density, which spells an enormous demand for the more efficient use of space and encourages verticalization in architecture. The publication outlines the current developments in South Korean architecture, urban development and landscape architecture by examining 32 projects in detail. An in-depth view of contemporary South Korean architecture is given by five essays that address topics such as the fusion of tradition and the modern, the re-defining of so-called "social spaces" and the country's special topographical situation. The authors are both architects, trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

The accurate and efficient discretization of singularly perturbed advection-diffusion equations on arbitrary 2D and 3D domains remains an open problem. An interesting approach to tackle this problem is the complete flux scheme (CFS) proposed by G.D. Thiart and further investigated by J. ten Thije Boonkkamp. For the CFS, uniform second order convergence has been proven on structured grids. We extend a version of the CFS to unstructured grids for a steady singularly perturbed advection-diffusion equation. By construction, the novel finite volume scheme is nodally exact in 1D for piecewise constant source terms. This property allows to use elegant continuous arguments in order to prove uniform second order convergence on unstructured one-dimensional grids. Numerical results verify the predicted bounds and suggest that by aligning the finite volume grid along the velocity field uniform second order convergence can be obtained in higher space dimensions as well.

During the past decade, the science of dynamic meteorology has continued its rapid advance. The scope of dynamic meteorology has broadened considerably. Much of the material is based on a two-term course for seniors majoring in atmospheric sciences. This book presents a cogent explanation of the fundamentals of meteorology and explains storm dynamics for weather-oriented meteorologists. It discusses climate dynamics and the implications posed for global change. The new edition has added a companion website with MATLAB exercises and updated treatments of several key topics. Provides clear physical explanations of key dynamical principles Contains a wealth of illustrations to elucidate text and equations, plus end-of-chapter problems Holton is one of the leading authorities in contemporary meteorology, and well known for his clear writing style Instructor's Manual available to adopters NEW IN THIS EDITION A companion website with MATLAB® exercises and demonstrations Updated treatments on climate dynamics, tropical meteorology, middle atmosphere dynamics, and numerical prediction

In arid and semi-arid areas, the main contributions to land surface processes are precipitation, surface evaporation and surface energy balancing. In the close-to-surface layer and root-zone layer, vapor flux is the dominant flux controlling these processes - process which, in turn, influence the local climate pattern and the local ecosystem. The work reported in this thesis attempts to understand how the soil airflow affects the vapor transport during evaporation processes, by using a two-phase heat and mass transfer model. The necessity of including the airflow mechanism in land surface process studies is discussed and highlighted.
