Conversion Coatings written by John W. Bibber and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is a guide to all new and presently existing processes available to chemically modify the surfaces of industrially used metals. The modifications described here will produce hard scratch-resistant surfaces, corrosion-resistant surfaces, and surfaces that will easily accept applied coatings, such as industrial paints. Included in the book are processes for aluminum, magnesium, titanium, iron, copper, and silver and their respective alloys, as well as a number of other metals and their related alloys.

This book covers fundamentals and recent advancements on conversion coatings for magnesium and its alloys. The contents are presented in two sections, respectively dealing with chemical and electrochemical conversion coatings. The chemical conversion coating section is further subdivided into inorganic conversion coatings, organic conversion coatings and advanced approaches/coatings. The section on electrochemical conversion coatings spans from fundamentals to state-of-the-art progress on electrochemical anodization and plasma electrolytic oxidation of magnesium and its alloys.

A method was developed for applying an inorganic conversion coating on that is procedurally similar to chromate conversion coating methods; this method, however does not use or involve hazardous/toxic chemicals. The coating forms by precipitation involving Al{sup 3+} Li, OH−, CO32-, and possibly other anions. This polycrystalline coating is continuous, conformal and persistent in aggressive environments. Coating thicknesses range from several tenths to ten micrometers. Although the outer portions of the coating are porous, the pores do not penetrate to the substrate interface. These coatings do not match the levels of performance offered by commercially available chromate conversion coatings, but are capable of meeting many of the corrosion resistance, electrical resistivity, and paint adhesion requirements established in MIL-C-5541E ''Chemical Conversion Coatings on Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys.'' In this paper, methods for producing the talc coating on aluminum alloys 1100 and 6061-T6 are described and compared to traditional chromate conversion coating methods. Resulting coating structure and composition are described. Performance data for the talc coatings in MIL-C-5541E required tests are presented along with data commercial chromate-based coatings.

This specification covers the requirements for two classes of chemical conversion coatings formed by the reaction of chemical conversion materials and the surfaces of aluminum and aluminum alloys. This specification is intended specifically to provide components of military weapon systems with maximum corrosion resistance. The coating also provides a surface having better paint adhesion than uncoated aluminum. It is not intended as a general purpose coating for commercial and decorative applications, (see 6.1).

We have found that aluminum alloys exhibit unusual passivity when exposed to alkaline Li-salt solutions. Observed passivity is due to the formation of a polycrystalline Li2[Al2(OH)6]2·CO3·3H2O film on the aluminum surface. This film is persistent in aggressive environments and provides a significant degree of corrosion protection. On this basis, we have developed a simple non-electrolytic method of forming corrosion resistant coatings in alkaline Li-salt solution. This process is procedurally similar to traditional conversion coating methods, offers desirable properties, and has a low toxic hazard. In this paper, coating methods, coating characterization, and coating properties are presented. Results from parallel test performed with a commercial chromate conversion coatings are presented for comparison.
