A compelling study of new sincerity as a powerful cultural practice, born in perestroika-era Russia, and how it interconnects with global social and media flows The global cultural practice of a new sincerity in literature, media, art, design, fashion, film, and architecture grew steadily in the wake of the Soviet collapse. Cultural historian Ellen Rutten traces the rise and proliferation of a new rhetoric of sincere social expression characterized by complex blends of unabashed honesty, playfulness, and irony. Insightful and thought provoking, Rutten s masterful study of a sweeping cultural trend with roots in late Soviet Russia addresses postsocialist, postmodern, and postdigital questions of selfhood. The author explores how and why a uniquely Russian artistic and social philosophy was shaped by cultural memory, commodification, and mediatization, and how, under Putin, new sincerity talk merges with transnational pleas to revive sincerity. This essential study stands squarely at the intersection of the history of emotions, media studies, and post-Soviet studies to shed light on a new cultural reality one that is profoundly affecting creative thought, artistic expression, and lifestyle virtually everywhere.

As Christians, we have real hope in Jesus that we have been called to share with others. But how we share that hope makes a difference. In a world that rejects everything we believe, we face a dilemma: how do we walk closely with God without caving in to pressure or alienating those we want to reach? In this six-session video Bible study, Chris Hodges looks at the lives of both Daniel and Jesus, showing how we can stand for our biblical beliefs without being hostile or insulting to others. We can stand up for God's truth in a morally corrupt culture–while still loving others–because the goal is never about winning the argument but about winning hearts. As Jesus demonstrated, when we connect with others before we correct them, we can handle the hard questions without compromising God's grace or truth. Chris offers fresh insights and practical ideas to encourage Christians struggling with their cultural reality to hold God's standards high and to keep his grace deep–just as Jesus did, and just as his followers today are called to do. The Daniel Dilemma Study Guide includes video discussion questions, Bible exploration, and personal study and reflection materials for in-between sessions. Sessions include: In the World but Not of It Identity Theft You Are What You Worship Who's the Boss? Divided, Distracted, and Disturbed What the World Needs Now Designed for use with the Daniel Dilemma Video Study (sold separately).

Annotation. The category of belief has been severely criticised in the last decades but ideas of having principles based on interior refl ections and conscience are as strong as ever across the world. This indicates that the modern idea of conviction - religious or secular - should be understood as a way of relating to the world that has a genealogy of its won that is not identical to religious belief. Modern convictions are based on two forms of ethics: firstly an individualized ethics of sincerity that emerged from the 17th century onwards as an ideal of honest and consistent public conduct. Secondly, an ethics of consequence that emerges with radical, Jacobin and collective politics and a new belief in radical socio-political utopias in the 19th century. In the 20th century, these ethical formations have spread across the world and form today the basis of a global grammar of interiority that lies at the heart of near-universal fi gures such as the 'activist' and the committed selfl ess social worker. Today more than ever before in human history, the dependency for comfort along with the indispensable necessity of moral, emotional and spiritual encouragement is in conflict with the iniquitous disposition of this present day society. The spirit of this world continues to resist and debilitate the divinely instilled organic appetite that is part of human original nature, personality and character. Even though the surrounding world tries to convince us as if we are unlovable, worthless and unforgivable, this volume will inspire our sensibleness so as to persist with the needed confidence, for finding or seeing the respectable extent of our own worth on the supreme pedestal of God’s given image and moral strength. We are exquisitely designed and divinely designated to remain everlastingly precious in love, goodness and reassurance. Even though our own heart tends to discourage and condemn us, this comforting volume will empower our vision to discern the true meaning and purpose of human existence, by authenticating the greatness of our value with eternity in view. The structure of human nature, character and personality would not be reliable pertaining to fundamental moral strength, lasting comfort and true happiness, unless exist a supreme purpose to appreciate the reason of holding on to such an objective. In actual fact, without this perpetual purpose along with love, faith and hope that galvanize our mind, heart and soul, there would not dwell the needed optimism for the author to initiate such painstaking descriptive work with the view to put in paper the proceeding five volumes of Authenticity, Comfort, Love, Perception and Dedication.

Among the subjects this volume touches on are adult psychopathology, psychoanalytic technique, developmental theory, the training of psychoanalysts, child and adolescent psychopathology, and the appraisal and application of the work of W. Bion and of R. Money-Kyrle. This is a good introduction to the author's work but it is those readers with clinical psychoanalytic experience and a working acquaintance with his neo-Kleinian contributions who will enjoy this book the most.

New York City 1992: a year after riots exploded between black and Jewish neighbors in Brooklyn, a black family is brutally murdered in their Crown Heights home. A teenager is quickly convicted, and the justice system moves on. Twenty-two years later, journalist Rebekah Roberts gets a letter: I didn't do it. Frustrated with her work at the city’s sleaziest tabloid, Rebekah starts to dig. But witnesses are missing, memories faded, and almost no one wants to talk about that grim, violent time in New York City—not even Saul Katz, a former NYPD cop and her source in Brooklyn’s insular Hasidic community. So she goes it alone. And as she gets closer to the truth of that night, Rebekah finds herself in the path of a killer with two decades of secrets to protect. From the author of the Edgar-nominated Invisible City comes another timely thriller that illuminates society’s darkest corners. Told in part through the eyes of a jittery eyewitness and the massacre’s sole survivor, Julia Dahl's Conviction examines the power—and cost—of community, loyalty, and denial.
