In the best of times and in darker days, the strong family unit is one of the most valuable building blocks of our societies. The Cornish family, in its individuality, in its far-flung breadth and with its sense of worldwide community, is a vigorous example of this truth. In this magnificent book, Dr Bernard Deacon explores who we are, our forefathers and our descendants, where we come from and where we are headed and how these major themes are expressed in the meaning of our names.

"This collection gathers the expertise of scholars in several disciplines to examine the manner in which financial and economic arguments were expressed in pamphlets, broadsides, and longer works of literature in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to assess to what extent the political realities of the day were informed by these debates or, alternatively, shaped by that rhetoric. The contributors to the volume draw upon an extensive variety of contemporary sources and modern analyses of the formative years of the financial revolution to reexamine many of the existing conventional ideas about the relationship between money, power, and print, and to suggest that the subject is far more complex and interrelated than most studies up to now have indicated. Particular attention is paid to the fact that the financial revolution did not occur in London in isolation from the various regions of the British Isles." "The essays address the question of how money, power, and print influenced the contemporary emergence of a radically different public finance structure in the British empire and how retrospective understanding of the results have influenced historical readings of the texts and the events. A number of contributions offer detailed analyses of particular moments or structures in the reshaping of the public financial sphere, such as the parliamentary and pamphlet debate over the establishment of the Bank of England and proposals for a land bank as an alternative. Other essays focus on broader themes illustrative of larger trends during the period, such as the Scottish support for an expedition to Madagascar to take advantage of presumed pirate treasure on the island."--BOOK JACKET.

Boconnoc written by Catherine Lorigan and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-03 with History categories.

The story of the estate at Boconnoc, situated near Lostwithiel in south-east Cornwall, is an extraordinary one. As this history demonstrates, members of the Cornish families who have owned the estate over many centuries have played important roles within the immediate locality and in national events. Catherine Lorigan explores their eventful lives – or in many cases deaths: dragged over a cliff by greyhounds, slain in battle, executed for treason or killed in duels. She traces how the medieval fortified tower house evolved into a Georgian mansion, discusses how the grounds and gardens have been transformed, and examines the relationship of the estate with the agricultural and industrial landscape in which it is set. Still family owned and run, Boconnoc retains the qualities that give it its magical and timeless ambience, while simultaneously, it has become a dynamic and successful business for the twenty-first century.

On The Parish written by Steve Hindle and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-05 with History categories.

On the Parish? is a study of the negotiations which took place over the allocation of poor relief in the rural communities of sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth century England. It analyses the relationships between the enduring systems of informal support through which the labouring poor made attempts to survive for themselves; the expanding range of endowed charity encouraged by the late sixteenth century statutes for charitable uses; and the developing system of parish relief co-ordinated under the Elizabethan poor laws. Based on exhaustive research in the archives of the trustees who administered endowments, of the overseers of the poor who assessed rates and distributed pensions, of the magistrates who audited and co-ordinated relief and of the royal judges who played such an important role in interpreting the Elizabethan statutes, the book reconstructs the hierarchy of provision of relief as it was experienced among the poor themselves. It argues that receipt of a parish pension was only the final (and by no means the inevitable) stage in a protracted process of negotiation between prospective pensioners (or 'collectioners', as they came to be called) and parish officers. This running theme is itself reflected in a series of chapters whose sequence seeks to mirror the experience of indigence, moving gradually (and by stages) from the networks of care provided by kin and neighbours into the bureaucracy of the parish relief system, emphasising in particular the importance of labour discipline in the thinking of parish officers. By illuminating the workings of a relief system in which notions of entitlement were both under-developed and contested, On the Parish? provides historical perspective for contemporary debates about the rights and obligations of the poor in a society where the dismantling of the welfare state implies that there is, once again, no right to relief from cradle to grave.
