Excerpt from Cornwall Parish Registers, Vol. 11: Marriages The issue of the eleventh volume of the Cornwall Marriages should be a matter of congratulation to all who are interested in family history, and especially to those who desire to trace the successive steps by which the present ownership of land in the county has come about. The Statute of Uses in the reign of King Henry VIII. and the abolition of the more onerous feudal tenures in the reign of King Charles II. not only afforded greater facilities for the transfer of land, but also increased the student's labour in obtaining evidence of such transfer. Modern manorial history is beset with difficulty. Younger sons and also daughters who under the old regime had often to be content with scant provision sometimes found themselves endowed with considerable estates in land. Such estates were frequently conferred by deed or indenture of which no counterfoil was preserved either in the public record offices or in the larger collections of muniments in private hands. Moreover the old system of inquisitiones post mortem in which such settlements were recorded was discontinued. For perfecting the history of the descent of land recourse therefore has usually to be had to the present owners whose title deeds are often of little value to the topographer, and to wills and parish registers. And for the purpose of clearing up such difficulties the present series has been found of considerable value. An illustration will make this clear. In 1640 Thomas Ericke died and after his death it was found that he had been possessed of the manor of Trethwall or Trethewell in Ludgvan, and that Mary his sister, the wife of Michael Vyvyan was his heir. In 1686 John Robyns and Loveday his wife conveyed the manor to Richard Hoblyn. The problem was to discover how the manor came to John Robyns and the usual sources of information yielded no assistance.
