Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is setting new missions for companies and shining a welcome light on issues such as the behaviour of board members, shared value, the well-being of stakeholders, the protection of vulnerable individuals and the roles played by public opinion and shareholders. This timely book seeks to lay the foundations for a sustainable corporate governance based on the European Commission definition of CSR as ‘the responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society’. More generally, this sustainable corporate governance responds to some of the pressing challenges of the 21st century, from sustainable finance and climate change to carbon reduction and population growth.

The current theory of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is developing along three interwoven lines - oral, social, and environmental. Although everybody recognizes that although CSR is of growing concern in a globalized economy, it being at the top of the board of director's agenda and also good for business, there is no sign of consensus on its rules, structures, or procedures. Now, this collection of essays by leading jurists, businesspeople, and academics takes a giant step toward a more cohesive and durable set of principles that can contribute to a cleaner environment and a better society while respecting and protecting the interests of all stakeholders.

Now more than ever, there is a growing importance for companies to ramp up their focus on social responsibility. An effective CSR program can have a positive impact on companies, employees, and consumers. This new volume, Corporate Social Responsibility in the Global Business World: A Conceptual, Regulatory, and Illustrative Framework, covers the parameters of corporate social responsibility around the world, elucidating the concepts, evolution, cultural dimensions, key areas, and disclosure and reporting methods and how CSR is being considered and implemented across the globe. The book also offers a future outlook for CSR. The book begins with a thorough introduction to CSR, covering its meaning and definition along with the principles of CSR for effective implementation, its inherent benefits, and its challenges. It goes on to cover the status of CSR in emerging economies with the emphasis on emerging trends in corporate governance, reporting, indexing, and certification. The volume considers the evolution of CSR from voluntary to mandatory along with the underlining advantages and disadvantages while also giving comparisons of CSR in developed versus developing nations. The book looks at the regulations and legislation around the world pertaining to CSR, such as universal GRI standards and legislative framework of countries like UK, USA, India, Germany, France, Canada, China, and Indonesia that have been sketched out covering expenditures, disclosure, and reporting obligations. The authors share case studies of implemented CSR projects, initiatives, and practices, highlighting several societal and environmental issues either through stakeholder relations and collaborations with NGOs or agencies or by adhering to government regulations for CSR compliance. This book provides a valuable overview of CSR and how effective implementation can lead to a corporation’s contribution to worldwide and regional sustainability and the well-being of society and the environment.

"This work is comprehensive and accessible analysis of the contemporary challenges to the conduct and legitimacy of businesses. Illustrated throughout with examples and evidence from research, it raises questions and offers new ways to think about these challenges. It is the most engaging and readable work on the subject available." Mike Rowe, University of Liverpool Management School Hardly a week goes by without some aspect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) hitting the headlines. One week it can be bankers' bonuses, next it is the environmental impact of corporations or their approach to human rights. Hardly an aspect of business behaviour or an area of corporate activity is excluded. Along with the issues, the challenges proliferate not just around Wall Street and the City of London but from Sarajevo to Stockholm, Manila to Manchester. Even the Financial Times talks about a crisis in capitalism with the corporation having 'inherent failings' that grow out stewardship failings because they are not 'effectively owned'. This new edition of Corporate Responsibility starts with a fundamental shift in perspective from the previous edition by highlighting the change from corporate responsibility being a vital business issue, to being the vital issue facing business. In the process, the author brings together a comprehensive guide to the subject by addressing contemporary developments in both theory and practice. A distinct intellectual framework is developed that highlights the ways the issues at the heart of corporate responsibility hang together. This links the ethics that underpin the values of corporations and their leadership to the way they exercise their responsibilities as stewards not just of their business but of the natural, human and built environment which they affect. Latest research is integrated with case studies that allow the teacher, student and researcher to access the body of contemporary knowledge while responding to a rapidly changing landscape. The book has been restructured to allow: Greater emphasis on the global challenges of corporate responsibility. Space for the policy initiatives that have emerged. New chapters on CSR practice internationally, codes of behaviour and the nature and evolution of corporate governance. Detailed examination of contemporary events such as the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Fukushima nuclear radiation disaster, the widening gap between CEO remuneration and that of others and concerns about corporate tax avoidance. Essential material for the successful study of international business. Tom Cannon has held senior academic appointments in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and is currently Professor of Strategic Development at the University of Liverpool.
