The history, evolution, and eventual resolution of the emotional controversy during the 1970's over infant feeding in third world countries and the resulting consumer boycott of Nestle products are examined in this account prepared by request of the Nestle Corporation. The report's objectives were to identify the social, economic, and political aspects of the controversy and to review the series of events that led Nestle to its current policy on infant formula marketing. The report examines 1) the origin of the controversy, 2) critical issues raised, 3) techniques used by Nestle's critics, and 4) Nestle's response to the issues and the public debate, in some detail. The resolution of the controversy, initiated by the adoption of an International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1981, is described. Gradual acceptance of Nestle's compliance with the WHO code came about largely as a result of the findings of the Nestle Infant Formula Audit Commission and a "Statement of Understanding" in which Nestle outlined methods of dealing with remaining areas of concern. The end of the Nestle boycott was formally announced in October, 1984. The report emphasizes the complexities surrounding the development and resolution of the controversy. It concluded by stressing, the importance of commitment of financial and human resources by industry, government, health, and religious organizations to eventually improve infant health and nutrition in the Third World. Reference and biographic notes are included.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development in Emerging Economies is an anthology of seven case studies plus two theoretical chapters in a comparative context. It analyzes issues related to the rise of multinational corporations, their immense economic and political influence in a globalized world, and their social responsibility/corporate citizenship. Corporate social responsibility is closely examined in terms of meeting the challenges of the widening gap between rich and poor, relationships with sovereign states, environmental degradation, exploitation of natural resources, labor practices, and human rights issues in societies in which multinational corporations operate. Are these corporations exempt from social roles and accountable to only their shareholders (the minimalist position propounded by economists such as Milton Friedman ), or do they also have ethical and social responsibilities to participate in improving the quality of human lives in impoverished societies in Africa , Asia and Latin America?

Business schools, the media, the corporate sector, governments, and non-governmental organizations have all begun to pay more attention to issues of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in recent years. These issues encompass broad questions about the changing relationship between business, society and government, environmental issues, corporate governance, the social and ethical dimensions of management, globalization, stakeholder debates, shareholder and consumer activism, changing political systems and values, and the ways in which corporations can respond to new social imperatives. This Oxford Handbook is an authoritative review of the academic research that has both prompted, and responded to, these issues. Bringing together leading experts in the area, it provides clear thinking and new perspectives on CSR and the debates around it. The Handbook is divided into seven key sections: * Introduction, * Perspectives on CSR, * Critiques of CSR, * Actors and Drivers, * Managing CSR, * CSR in Global Context, * Future Perspectives and Conclusions.
