This collection, which includes the Poemandres and some addresses of Hermes to disciples Tat, Ammon and Asclepius, was said to have originated in the school of Ammonius Saccas and to have passed through the keeping of Michael Psellus: it is preserved in fourteenth century manuscripts. The last three tracts in modern editions were translated independently from another manuscript by Ficino's contemporary Lodovico Lazzarelli (1447-1500) and first printed in 1507. Extensive quotes of similar material are found in classical authors such as Joannes Stobaeus.Parts of the Hermetica appeared in the 4th-century Gnostic library found in Nag Hammadi. Other works in Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Coptic and other languages may also be termed Hermetica -- another famous tract is the Emerald Tablet, which teaches the doctrine "as above, so below".

The Hermetica are a body of theological-philosophical texts written in late antiquity, but long believed to be much older. Their supposed author, Hermes Trismegistus, was thought to be a contemporary of Moses, and the Hermetic philosophy was regarded as an ancient theology, parallel to the received wisdom of the Bible. This first English translation based on reliable texts, together with Brian P. Copenhaver's comprehensive introduction, provide an indispensable resource to scholars in ancient philosophy and religion, early Christianity, Renaissance literature, and history, the history of science, and the occultist tradition in which the Hermetica have become canonical texts.

The so-called Hermetic writings have been known to Christian writers for many centuries. The early church Fathers (Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria) quote them in defense of Christianity. Stobaeus collected fragments of them. The Humanists knew and valued them. They were studied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in modern times have again been diligently examined by many scholars.

A collection of Greek writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistos, dating from some time before the close of the second century AD, Corpus Hermeticum forms the core of the Hermetic tradition, and was one of the main influences on and motivational factors for the Renaissance. This OMTO edition is based upon the classic translation by GRS Mead, lightly updated into more contemporary English to make the writings more accessible, however, with every effort made to leave Mead's masterful grammatical style intact. This is one of the world's greatest religio-philosophical and spiritual texts. It speaks directly to the human spirit and is the antithesis of an exoteric work, but rather one that aims to promote personal Gnosis. For these reasons, this edition resists the temptation to impose further interpretation or commentary upon the reader.
