Based on an innovative corpus-based approach, this book offers a comprehensive survey of the phonological and phonetic properties of L2 speech in English and German. The first part of the book critically examines current theoretical models and research methodologies in the field of second language acquisition of phonology and describes the advances that have been made in corpus linguistics over the past few years - in particular, the development of phonological learner corpora. It furthermore presents the first learner corpus of L2 English and L2 German that is fully aligned and has extensive phonological annotations: the LeaP corpus. The second part of the book describes the results of the quantitative and qualitative corpus analyses in the following areas of non-native speech: fluency, final consonant cluster realisation, vowel reduction and speech rhythm, intonation and general foreign accent. No? One might now spiteful say: luckily not! Jumping on the cliché that Germans are not able to pronounce the th-sounds properly, this saves us a lot of acoustic mishaps. Yet, meanwhile there do exist a few loanwords containing the apico- dental fricatives /ð/ or /θ/, as for example smoothie /'smuːði/ or thriller /'θrɪlə/. Still their proportion out of the total amount of English loans in German is vanishingly small. Bringing it to linguistic terms, these phonemes exclusively belong to the English phoneme inventory and do not constitute part of the German language system. Therefore the research question of this thesis is: Do phonological features influence the borrowing of a foreign word? There are a lot of reasons for the adaptation of loanwords and many works in linguistics deal with them in great detail (cf. for example Holland 2007: 49ff; Fischer 2008: 1ff). Speakers borrow words from other languages to fill gaps in their own lexical inventory. The reasons for such lexical gaps vary greatly: cultural innovation may introduce objects or actions that do not have a name in the native language; native words may be perceived as non-prestigious; names of foreign cities, institutions, and political figures which were once unknown may have entered the public eye; new words may be introduced for play, etc. (Calabrese and Wetzels 2009b: 1) Most discussions about the factors that influence the occurrence of a loanword go back to syntactic, lexical, semantic or social circumstances (cf. The book is the first to apply David Brazil s Discourse Intonation systems (prominence, tone, key and termination) to the study of a corpus of authentic, naturally-occurring spoken discourses. The Hong Kong Corpus of Spoken English (prosodic) is made up of approximately one million words consisting of four sub-corpora of equal size, namely academic, conversation, business and public. The participants are all adults and typically have either Cantonese or English as their first language. The four Discourse Intonation systems are described in terms of how the system works and how they are manifested in the corpus, both across the sub-corpora and also across speakers in the corpus. The book is accompanied with a CD containing the prosodically transcribed corpus together with iConc which is the software designed and written specifically to interrogate the HKCSE (prosodic). Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal fornecer subsídios para o futuro preparo de material didático para o ensino de pronúncia da língua inglesa. Para tanto, foram identificadas quais eram as palavras mais freqüentes da língua inglesa oral, suas principais colocações e verificamos se estas estavam presentes no material didático estudado. A pesquisa fundamentou-se na Lingüística de Corpus (Biber, 1998, 1995; Sinclair, 1991; Sanchez, 1995; Kennedy, 1998; Stubbs, 2001; Hunston, 2002; Berber Sardinha, 2000, 2004), na Lingüística Sistêmico-Funcional (Halliday, 1985; Martin, 1996; Eggins, 1994) e no ensino de pronúncia da língua inglesa (Baptista, 1992). Utilizamos uma metodologia baseada na análise de corpora eletrônicos, e fizemos a análise do material didático estudado com base no estudo feito por Piccin (2003). Esta discussão aponta questões relevantes para o ensino de pronúncia da língua inglesa em relação aos fonemas vocálicos que devam ser ensinados, e faz uma proposta teórica para que esse ensino não aconteça de forma isolada, uma vez que a pronúncia é um dos vários itens que auxiliam o aprendiz de língua inglesa a tornar-se fluente. Os resultados obtidos indicam que há uma lacuna muito grande entre o que deve ser ensinado em sala de aula (linguagem oral) e o que está presente no material didático (linguagem idealizada). Com este trabalho, pretendo fazer uma contribuição original para as áreas de Lingüística de Corpus e para o Ensino de Pronúncia da língua inglesa.
