This book presents an introduction to analysing semantics through corpus linguistics. Corpus linguistics involves the creation of large databases of natural language against which certain hypotheses can be tested. These corpora therefore enable language to be analysed objectively for semantic information. The chapters present an introduction to the main areas of corpus linguistics, including the design and compilation of corpora, and use of corpora within lexicography. The authors use this as a basis from which to introduce the key theories of meaning used in semantics, such as critical discourse analysis, social constructivism and hermeneutics. This step-by-step introduction will be invaluable reading for students of corpus linguistics or semantics.

This volume offers a state-of-the-art picture of work undertaken in the field of computer-aided corpus linguistics. While the focus is on English, central insights can be generalised to other languages, as well. As a work intended to mark the Silver Jubilee of ICAME, the International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English, the book combines surveys of the discipline by some of its major pioneers, including founders of ICAME itself, with cutting-edge work by younger scholars. It is divided into three sections: “Overviewing years of corpus linguistic studies”, “Descriptive studies in English syntax and semantics”, and “Second Language Acquisition, parallel corpora and specialist corpora”. The book bears witness to the impressive advances that have characterised the development of corpus linguistics over the past few decades – from terminological issues to practical applications, from theoretical and descriptive research to applied approaches, from monolingual to multilingual and specialist corpora, from corpus design to corpus exploitation tools.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Seminar Collocations and meaning, language: English, abstract: The object of this analysis is the triplet of (ostensible) synonyms oppress, repress, and suppress, all of which express an action of subjection and therefore share at least a part of their meaning. Also, all three of them are (in most contexts) commonly translated into German as ‘unterdrücken’. The question is to what extent they may be called synonymous. In order to answer this question, the British National Corpus was taken as an empirical basis. Compiled corpora offer the advantage of an approach which is time-saving and potentially free of oversights or slips, as decisions are open to be checked at any time again. Data and methods thus allow for an empirical and replicable analysis of meaning.

Research into varieties of Englishes around the world has received much attention from scholars. This book offers a new perspective from a cognitive inter and intra lexemic analysis of prepositional variations in Malaysian English and contrasts them with similar prepositions in New Zealand and British English. Based on corpora data from the three varieties, the author provides usage types analysis of the prepositions at, in and on. The analysis exploits cognitive approaches to prepositional polysemy and gives a motivated account of prepositional variations across varieties. The book offers a wealth of corpus based linguistic data and explanation to our understanding of variations in prepositional usage in different varieties of English. The distributional frequencies of various usage types are provided to illustrate the variation.

Corpora In Cognitive Linguistics written by Stefan Th. Gries and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-22 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Cognitive Linguistics, the branch of linguistics that tries to "make one's account of human language accord with what is generally known about the mind and the brain," has become one of the most flourishing fields of contemporary linguistics. The chapters address many classic topics of Cognitive Linguistics. These topics include studies on the semantics of specific words (including polysemy and synonymy) as well as semantic characteristics of particular syntactic patterns / constructions (including constructional synonymy and the schematicity of constructions), the analysis of causatives, transitivity, and image-schematic aspects of posture verbs. The key characteristic of this volume is that all papers adopt the methodological perspective of Corpus Linguistics, the rapidly evolving branch of linguistics based on the computerized analysis of language used in authentic settings. Thus, the contributions do not only all provide various new insights in their respective fields, they also introduce new data as well as new corpus-based and quantitative methods of analysis. On the basis of their findings, the authors discuss both theoretical implications going well beyond the singular topics of the studies and show how the discipline of Cognitive Linguistics can benefit from the rigorous analysis of naturally-occurring language. The languages which are investigated are English, German, Dutch, and Russian, and the data come from a variety of different corpora. As such, the present volume will be of interest to a wide range of scholars with many different foci and interests and should pave the way for further integration of usage-based techniques of analysis within this exciting paradigm.
