La presente monografía es el resultado de cerca de una década de trabajo. Tan larga gestación se debe tanto a la complejidad del tema como a la ardua y laboriosa tarea de investigación archivística. En efecto, en el Archivo Municipal de Almería (AMAL) hemos realizado un volcado completo de los Libros de Actas Capitulares desde 1697 a 1835; en el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Almería (AHPAL) hemos consultado diversos protocolos notariales: testamentos, dotes, fianzas, ventas reales, pode- res, etc.; en el Archivo General de Simancas (AGS), diferentes expedientes y hojas de servicios; en el Archivo Histórico Nacional (AHN), expedientes de probanzas para el ingreso en las Órdenes militares, expedientes personales, relaciones de méritos y ser- vicios, expedientes de jubilación, etc.; en el Archivo General Militar de Madrid (AGMM), diferentes nombramientos; en el Archivo General Militar de Segovia (AGMS), hojas de servicios y expedientes matrimoniales; en el Archivo Histórico de Protocolos de Madrid y en el de Granada, diversos testamentos y otros instrumentos notariales; en el Archivo de la Chancillería de Valladolid, algunos documentos; en el Archivo General Diocesano de Valladolid, varias partidas de nacimiento y defunción; en el Archivo de la Universidad de Granada (AUG), expedientes académicos; en el Archivo de la Real Chancillería de Granada (ArRChGr), expedientes de recibimiento de abogados y varios pleitos; en el Archivo Municipal de Ocaña, documentos relacionados con el conde de la Puebla de los Valles; en el Archivo Histórico de Orihuela, varias partidas. Por lo que se refiere a las fuentes impresas, hemos realizado un vaciado completo de todos los números de la Gaceta de Madrid correspondientes al periodo estudiado, así como la consulta de toda la prensa de la época en la Hemeroteca digital de la Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE); amén de los repertorios y diccionarios biográficos, de los nobiliarios y de la vasta literatura que aparece citada en la Bibliografía.

Este libro estudia los graduados de la Universidad de benedictina de Irache durante el siglo XVIII, que mantuvo la misma tónica que la centuria anterior, aunque con una lenta disminución hasta 1751. Desde entonces hasta su extinción, los grados fueron cada vez más restringidos. El elenco de graduados aporta un número destacado de egresados, especialmente en Artes y Medicina, aunque también en Teología y Cánones y, en menor medida, en Leyes. Cada una de las fichas permite ulteriores estudios prosopográficos, especialmente de las élites de la Congregación benedictina de Valladolid, y de las diócesis de Burgos, Pamplona y Calahorra en el siglo XVIII.

En esta magna obra, por su extensión y contenido, Javier Barrientos Grandon efectúa un recorrido por el sistema de gobernación de la monarquía española, mediante el examen de los personajes que se integraron en el sistema polisinodial o de los consejos. Por orden alfabético, y para el período 1500-1836, la estructura de cada biografía asume un modelo general que, con las variaciones accidentales derivadas de la naturaleza peculiar de cada consejo y de los datos y noticias que ha sido posible adquirir, gira en torno al oficio y la jurisdicción. Este criterio rector determina que su estructura no sea necesariamente cronológica y, así, las biografías cubren los siguientes ámbitos: de la identidad de la persona del consejero (nombre, títulos y dignidad);de la naturaleza del consejero (origen y patria); de la suficiencia del consejero (edad y cualidades del alma y del cuerpo); de la muerte del consejero y del oficio como perpetuo; de la familia del consejero (méritos y servicios de familia); de los méritos y servicios del consejero en cuanto a letras, armas y papeles y, eventualmente, dignidades en la iglesia; de su elección e ingreso y del cese en el oficio. Los datos y noticias que se ofrecen por el autor en cada biografía están debidamente justificados en notas a pie de página, en las que se consignan las fuentes, documentales y bibliográficas, que se han tenido a la vista, lo que nos sitúa ante un trabajo excepcional por su rigor técnico y originalidad. In Sexuality in the Confessional: A Sacrament Profaned, Stephen Haliczer places the current debate on sex, celibacy, and the Catholic Church in a historical context by drawing upon a wealth of actual case studies and trial evidence to document how, from 1530 to 1819, sexual transgression attended the heightened significance of the Sacrament of Penance. Attempting to reassert its moral and social control over the faithful, the Counter-Reformation Church underscored the importance of communion and confession. Priests were asked to be both exemplars of celibacy and "doctors of souls," and the Spanish Inquisition was there to punish transgressors. Haliczer relates the stories of these priests as well as their penitents, using the evidence left by Inquisition trials to vividly depict sexual misconduct, during and after confession, and the punishments wayward priests were forced to undergo. In the process, he sheds new light on the Church of the period, the repressed lives of priests, and the lives of their congregations; coming to a conclusion as startling as it is timely. Based on an exhaustive investigation of Inquisition cases involving soliciting confessors as well as numerous confessors' manuals and other works, Sexuality in the Confessional makes a significant contribution to the history of sexuality, women's history, and the sociology of religion.
